During the period of the Academy existence (Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians, Kyiv Medical Academy of Post-graduate Education named after P.L.Shupyk) it was run by Professors M.A. Levitsky (1918-1922), A.B. Bernshteyn (1922-1938), O.A. Chernyak (1938-1941), Ya.A. Okhrymenko (1943-1944), V.P. Komissaremko (1944), I.I. Kalchenko (1944-1957), V.D. Bratus' (1957-1959), M.N. Umovyst (1959-1984), V.M. Gyrin (1984-2002). Professors M.N. Umovyst and V.M. Gyrin headed the Academy over 40 years.

 Mykhaylo N. Umovyst (1919 - 2005) - Honoured Worker of Higher School of Ukraine (1978), Doctor of Medical Science (1970), Professor (1971), Head of the Department of Topographic Anatomy and Operative Surgery (1972-1990). Graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute (1942). Defended his Doctor's Thesis "Surgical Anatomy of Atrial-Ventricular Conduction System in Case of Congenital Valvular Defects" (1970). Disciple of scientific school of Acad. M.M. Amosov. Author of over 110 scientific works including I Monograph. Scientific direction - surgical anatomy of the oesophagus, morphology and surgery of the heart and vessels, wound process. 1 Doctor's and 3 Candidate's Dissertations were performed under his supervision. Participant of the Great Patriotic war. Decorated with the Orders of Lenin, October Revolution, the Red Banner of Labour, the Badge of Honour, 2 Orders of Patriotic War and the Red Star, Medals. Excellent Worker of Public Health. At that period from 1965, the Institute was subordinate to Public Health Ministry of the USSR.

 Vitaliy M. Gyrin (1936 - 2002) - Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (1993), Doctor of Medical Science (1982), Professor (1985). The first Head of the Department of Virology of the Academy (1985). Graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute (1960). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Enteroviruses in Residuary Waters and Scientific Substantiation of the Means of Decontamination" (1982). Disciple of Kyiv Scientific School of Microbiologists and Virologists (Prof. S.S. Dyachenko, Prof. V.F. Holub, Corresponding-Member of the AS of Ukraine V.P. Shyrobokov). Author of 150 scientific works including 9 monographs, textbooks and books. Scientific direction - investigation of ecological issues of spreading of enteroviruses, enterobacteria in residuary waters and other environmental objects. Substantiated the conformities to natural laws of purification of residuary waters from pathogenic viruses and Bacteria at barrier installations of a big city. Developed new methods of concentration and detection of enteroviruses and other agents from environment and the human body. 2 Doctor's and 4 Candidate's Dissertations were performed under his supervision. Decorated with the Orders of Merit (III class), the Red Banner of Labour, the Badge of Honour, Medals, Honorary Diploma of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Deputy Minister of Public Health Ministry of Ukraine (1978-1984). Participant of the Chernobyl NPP Disaster Consequences Liquidation. During his administration Kyiv Institute of Advanced Training of Physicians became subordinate to Ukrainian Health Ministry (October of 1991) and in May of 1996 it was reorganized into Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education. In 1998 it was named after P.L.Shupyk.
