ZNAMENSKY (1929-1997) - State Prize Winner of the USSR, Doctor of Medical Sciences (1969), Professor (1979), Head of the Department of Epidemiology (1974-1971), Head of the Department of Microbiology (1976-1997). Graduated from St. Petersburg Military-Navy Medical Academy (1953). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Problems of Etiology of the Far East Scarlatiniform Fever" (submitted for a Candidate's Degree). Author of more than 176 scientific works including 3 monographs, 3 textbook editions. Scientific direction - natural and endemic extremely dangerous infections evolution of agents of infectious diseases, elaboration of complex bio-sorptional drugs. One Doctor's and 9 Candidate's Dissertations were performed under his guidance. Founder of scientific school: new principles of correction of human normal microflora. Developed 2 pharmaceuticals: imosgent and enterosgel. Author of 12 inventions. Decorated with Medals.

Ivan S. ZOZULIA (1939) - Honoured Worker of Science and Technology 91998), state Prize Winner of Ukraine (1993), Academician of the Academy of Higher School (1993), Doctor of Medical Science (1991), Professor (1992), Head of the Department of Primary and Emergency Medical Care (1992). Graduated from Chernivtsi Medical Institute (1965). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Rehabilitation of Patients with Neurological Manifestations of Hypertensive Disease" (1990). Disciple of Professors D.I. Panchenko and Ye. L. Macheret. Author of 243 scientific works including 5 monographs, 10 textbook editions, 13 inventions and licences. Scientific direction - diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis of vascular and inflammatory brain disorders, craniocerebral and spinal traumata, diseases of peripheral nervous system, investigation of nervous system lesions after the Chernobyl NPP Disaster, rendering primary and urgent medical care to patients and victims. Bohdan H. IS'KIV (1936) - Honoured Educator of Public Education of Ukraine (1993), Doctor of Medical Science (1989), Professor (1992), Head of Otorhynolaryngology Department (1991). Graduated from L'viv Medical Institute (1960). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Metotympanoplasty in Patients with Chronic Purulent Medial Otitis" (1989). Disciple of Prof. O.S. Kolomyychenko and Prof. O.A. Yevdoschenko. Author of 96 scientific works, 2 inventions, 42 rationalization proposals, 1 textbook edition. Scientific direction - fundamental experimental-histological research of the model of tympanoplasty, immunological investigations of ENT pathology, a new direction in hearing improving microsurgery-metotympanoplasty, cryosurgery in chronic diseases and ENT tumors, diagnosis and treatment of chronic purulent medial otitis and otogenic intracranial complications. 4 Candidate's Dissertations have been performed under his supervision. Vice-President of Ukrainian Scientific Association of Transplantologists, Chairman of Direction Board of Scientific Association of Otorhinolaryngologists of Kyiv and Kyiv-Region. Denys M. KALYUZHNY (1900-1976) - Corresponding-Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (1961), Honoured Science Worker of Ukraine (1964), Doctor of Medical Science (1954), Professor (1957), Head of the Department of Common Hygiene (1946-1970). Graduated from Kharkiv Medical Institute (1926). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation"Hygienic Assessment of Atmospheric Pollution by Waste Products from Ferrous Metallurgy enterprises and the measures of its sanitation" (1954). Disciple of Acad. O.M. Marzeyev. Author of over 250 scientific works, including 24 monographs. Scientific direction - hygienic fundamentals of village reorganization in Ukraine. Founder of scientific school in the sphere of atmospheric air protection. 16 Doctor's and 22 Candidate's Dissertations were performed under his supervision. Disciples - Prof. O.H. Voloschenko, Prof. Yu. D. Dumasky. Participant of the Great Patiotic war. Decorated with the orders of Patriotic war. Lidia D. KALYUZHNA (1939) - Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (1998), Doctor of Medical Science (1990), Professor (1992), Head of the Department of Children's Dermatovenerology (1986-1993), that of Dermatovenerology (1993). Graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute (1962). Defended her Doctor's Dissertation "Clinical and Immunological Substantiation of Non-Specific Immunocorrection of Atopic Dermatitis" (1990). Disciple of Prof. K.A. Kalantayevska. Author of 150 scientific works including 4 monographs. Scientific direction - pathogenesis and treatment of allergic dermatoses, hair diseases, syphilis. 5 Candidate's Dissertations have been performed under her supervision.

Ivan I. KALCHENKO (1904-1976) - Honoured Science Worker of Ukraine (1951), Doctor of Medical Science (1943), Professor (1944), Head of the Department of Surgery-2 (1952-1975). Graduated from Rostov Medical Institute (1929). Defended his Doctor's Dissertation "Traumatic Lesions of Trunks, their Plasty and Tubage" (1943). Disciple of the scientific school of Prof. P.M. Napalkov. Author of 130 scientific works including 4 monographs. Scientific direction - surgical gastroenterology. 30 Doctor's and Candidate's Dissertations were performed under his guidance. Kostyantyn M. KLYMOV (1901-1957) - State Prize Winner (1953), Associate Professor (1952), Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (1952-1957). Graduated from Astrakhan Medical Institute (1925), Disciple of Prof. O.H. Yeletsky. Author of about 30 scientific works. Scientific direction - treatment of false joints, bone defects and fractures. Contributed considerably to the development of reconstructive-restorative operations on articulations, traumatism prophylaxis. Founder of scientific school. Disciples - Prof. O.T. Sklyarenko and Prof. O.P. Mezhenina.

Hennady V. KNYSHOV (1934) - State Prize Winner of Ukraine in the field of Science and Technology (1988), Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (1994), Academician of the AMS of Ukraine (1994), Doctor of Medical Science (1975), Professor (1984). Head of the Cardio-Vascular Surgery Department (1992). Graduated from Donetsk Medical Institute (1958). Defended his Thesis for a Doctor's Degree "Surgical Treatment of Rheumatological Mitral Valve Deficiency" (1975). Disciple of Prof. M.M. Amosov. Took traineeships in leading clinics of the USA and Great Britain. Author of 250 scientific works, 9 inventions. Scientific direction - improvement of surgical treatment of acquired heart diseases, ischemic heart disease and complicated cardiac arrhythmia. The first in Ukraine to introduce and improve the operations of aorto-coronary shunting, treatment of cardiac tachiarrhythmia. Over 20 Doctor's and Candidate's Dissertations have been performed under his supervision. Director of Kyiv Research Institute of Cardio-Vascular Surgery (1988). President of Association of Cardio-Vascular Surgeons of Ukraine. Decorated with the Order "Badge of Merit", Honorary Diploma of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, a Medal.

Volodymyr M. KOVALENKO (1949) - Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (1998), Corresponding-Member of the AMS of Ukraine (2002), Doctor of Medical Science (1982), Professor (1983), Head of the Department of Therapy and Rheumatology (1991), Graduated from Dnipropetrovsk Medical Institute (1972). Defended his Thesis for a Doctor's Degree "Clinical and Instrumental Diagnosis of Early Stages of Cardiac Failure in Cardio-Vascular System Diseases (1972). Disciple of Prof. V.M. Dzyak. Author of about 300 scientific works including 10 monographs and 1 manual. Scientific direction - diagnosis and treatment of cardio-vascular and rheumatological diseases with autoimmune and immunocomplex of their development. 8 Doctor's and 22 Candidate's Dissertations have been performed under his supervision. Leading therapeutist (1990) and Rheumatologist (1991) of Health Ministry of Ukraine. Head of Ukrainian Rheumatological Centre (1991). President of Association of Pheumatologists of Ukraine (1993), Member of European (1995) and World (1997) Antirheumatological Leagues. Mykhaylo S. KOLOMYICHENKO (1892-1973) - Honoured Scientist of Ukraine (1954), Professor (1936, without defending his Doctor's Dissertation), Head of the Department of Surgery-2 (1936-1950). Graduated from Medical Faculty of Kyiv University (1919). Disciple of Prof. Ye. H. Chernyakhovsky, Prof. M.M. Volkovych, Acad. O.P. Krymov. Author of over 130 scientific works including 5 monographs. Scientific direction - surgery of oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, emergency medical care, in particular, in oesophageal pathology. For the first time in Ukraine, he performed complicated plastic operations for creating artificial oesophagus from small and large intestines. Participant of the Great Patriotic war. Decorated with 2 Orders of Lenin, 2 Orders of the Red Banner of Labour, the Orders of the Patriotic War (I and II class), October Revolution, the Badge of Honour, Medals.

Oleksiy S. KOLOMYICHENKO (1898-1973) - Honoured Worker of Science of Ukraine (1955), Corresponding-Member of the AS of Ukraine (1967), Doctor of Medical Science, Professor (1944), Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (1944-1966). Graduated from Medical Faculty of Kyiv University (1924). Defended his Thesis for a Doctor's Degree "Otogenic Cerebral Abscesses" (1944). Disciple of Prof. S.O. Stavraki, M.Ya. Karshak. Author of over 200 scientific works. Scientific direction - control of malignant tumors and otosclerosis surgical treatment, ultrasound and laser application in ENT -practice. 22 Doctor's and 38 Candidate's Dissertations were performed under his supervision. Disciples - Professors: O.A. Yevdoschenko, I.A. Kurylin, S.I. Mostovoy, V.A. Hukovych. Head Otolaryngologist of Health Ministry of Ukraine (1953-1972).

Vasyl' P. KOMISSARENKO (1907-1993) - Honoured Doctor of Ukraine (1954), Doctor of Medical Science (1941), Professor (1942), Honoured Worker of Science (1960), State Prize Winner of Ukraine (1976). Founder of Kyiv Research Institute of Endocrinology. Director of Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians (1944).

Yevhenia V. KOKHANEVICH (1929) - Honoured Physician of Ukraine (1993), Doctor of Medical Science (1972), Professor (1985), Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology-3 (1980). Graduated from Vinnytsya Medical Institute (1954). Defended her Thesis for a Doctor's Degree "Light and Fluorescence Colpocervicoscopy, Histochemical and Cytogenetic Parallels in Diagnosis of Pretumoral Conditions and Carcinoma of Uterine Cervix" (1972). Disciple of Prof. O.Yu. Lurye, Corresponding-Member of the AMS of the USSR, Prof. I.T. Shevchenko. Author of 254 scientific works including 5 monographs. Scientific direction - uterine cervix pathology, pregnancy and delivery, oncogynaecology, incomplete pregnancy, genital endometriosis. Founder of Kyiv scientific school of oncogynaecology. 15 Candidate's Dissertations have been performed under her supervision. Honoured Inventor of the USSR.

Borys P. KRYSHTOPA (1938) - Honoured Physician of Ukraine (1982), Doctor of Medical Science (1986), Professor (1988), Head of the Department of Public Health Administration (1986). Graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute (1961). Head of Sumy Regional Health Department (1968-1972), Deputy Minister of Ukrainian Public Health Ministry (1974-1978). Chief of a group of advisers of the USSR Health Ministry in Afghanistan (1978-1981). Defended his Thesis for a Doctor's Degree "Scientific and Organizational Substantiations of the Development of Public Health in Democratic Republic of Afghanistan with Using Soviet Experience (1985). Disciple of Prof. P.L. Shupyk, O.A. Grando. Author of more than 100 scientific works including 5 monographs. Oleksandr Z. LAZAREV (1870-1951) - Honoured Worker of Science of Ukraine (1941), Professor (1922), Head of the Department of Pediatrics (1930-1951). Major scientific direction - children's phthisiology. Author of the first monograph in Ukraine on the problems of children's tuberculosis. One of the founders of Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians (1918).

Andriy A. LAYKO (1936) - Honoured Physician of Ukraine (2002), Doctor of Medical Science (1988), Professor (1991), Head of the Department of Children's Otolaryngology (1989). Graduated from Ivano-Frankivsk Medical Institute (1959). Defended his Thesis for a Doctor's Degree "Recidivating medial otitis" (1988). Disciple of Prof. S.I. Mostovoy. Author of over 100 scientific works, including 2 monographs, 2 textbooks, 2 manual editions, 6 inventions including 1 licence, 50 rationalized proposals. Scientific direction - diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory ear processes in children. Major principles of ablation in operations for laryngeal cancer. Olha I. LASYTSA (1938) - Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (2001), Doctor of Medical Science (1983), Professor (1988), Head of the Department of Pediatrics-1 (1987). Graduated from Odesa Medical Institute (1961). Defended her Thesis for a Doctor's Degree "Clinical and Immunological Pecularities of Asthamic Bronchitis in Children" (1982). Disciple of scientific school of Corresponding-Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Russia O.M. Khokhol. Author of 170 scientific works including 7 monographs. Vitaliy M. LEVENETS (1930) - State Prize Winner of Ukraine (1997), Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (1989), Doctor of Medical Science (1970), Professor (1972). Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Burn Diseases (1974). Graduated from the Second Moscow Medical Institute (1954). Defended his Thesis for a Doctor's Degree "Osteo-Cartilaginous homoplasty of coxofemoral joint". Disciple of Corresponding-Member of the AMS of Russia, Prof. F.R. Bohdanov. Author of 247 scientific works. Scientific direction - deformative arthrosis, aseptic necrosis, articular lesions and diseases, reconstructive-restorative surgery, endoprothetics of joints, transplantology, prophylaxis of purulent complications.
