History

Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Fetal Medicine has been officially established in April 2010. The creation of the department functioning was preceded by many years of research and practice, so its young age shows the high potential and unbreakable hope only, but not the lack of experience and own philosophy.

Philosophy of the Department

Fetal medicine is the new section of obstetrics which is rapidly growing worldwide. Ukraine - is not an exception. Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Fetal Medicine establishes, evaluates and implements modern approaches to the prevention of fetal diagnosis of congenital diseases and the treatment of certain dangerous prenatal conditions.

Preventive direction aims to determine the risk of having children with birth defects through a comprehensive evaluation of biochemical and instrumental screening. Another important branch is a perinatal psychology and psychotherapy, which consider the interaction of a mother and a child during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum period. The normalization of the spiritual and psychological state of pregnant women is currently at special attention throughout the world.

To understand and to help whenever possible born or unborn beings - the purpose and philosophy of our work.


Education

The Department provides courses of specialization in the field "Obstetrics and Gynecology", "General practice - family medicine," and pre-courses in the field "Obstetrics and Gynecology", "Perinatal Psychology."

Cycles of postgraduate education: "Medical and social aspects of perinatal psychology," "Modern diagnostics, Colposcopic screening, prevention (and treatment of cervical pathology," "Echoscopic diagnostics in obstetrics and gynecology."

Prepared for the introduction: "Modern visions on intrauterine infection," "Fundamentals of fetal medicine," "Invasive diagnostic procedures", "Management of pregnancy after ART," “Current issues of Perinatology", "Actual problems of women's reproductive health", "Modern aspects of preventive perinatology and family planning".

The Department organizes and conducts the cycles of thematic follow-up on the current issues of obstetrics and gynecology in Kiev region and in other regions of Ukraine as well.

Training of interns is being provided in the following specialties: obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine.

Clinical residencies and post-graduates: the department trained 4 clinical residents (including - 3 foreigners), 2 graduate students and 1 PhD.

Department staff has extensive experience in educational work with young professionals from near and far abroad.

Research and investigation

The main research topic: "Individualized support of pregnancy in women with perinatal risk factors"

The object of the research - 350 pregnant women, their fetuses and infants.

The purpose of work - development of effective methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of intrauterine pathology of the fetus, as well as effective family planning programs and methods of prevention obstetric and perinatal complications. The terms: 2010 – 2015.

During a short time the department published 19 scientific papers in leading journals of Ukraine and 2 in International journals.

Clinical work:

The Clinical bases of the department are: Kyiv city delivery house № 2, Academic Clinic, Clinic "Victoria", Clinic "A Mother and a Child." Staff of the department provides consulting in the polyclinics and stationaries.

Currently, the department performs all the types of surgical interventions on the pelvic organs, including those involving endoscopic techniques, as well as fetoscopic operations.
To date, there is a possibility of the following procedures:

- establishing intraumbilical port-systems for the administration of nutrients directly to the fetus in the presence of placental dysfunction, accompanied by intrauterine growth retardation;
- individual and group sessions with experts on perinatal psychology;
- full range of prenatal diagnostic and screening procedures, including amnio and cordocentesis;
In the nearest future the Department will start:

-  balloon occlusion of the trachea in fetuses with diaphragmatic hernia;
- amnioinfusion in premature rupture of amniotic membranes;
- intrauterine blood transfusion in hemolytic anemia;
-   laser coagulation of placental anastomoses in twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

Psychological discomfort is not only the reason for the health disorders of future mothers, abnormal labour forces, but it also violates the prenatal development of the child. Individual and group work with perinatal psychologist to create harmonious conditions between a mother and a fetus helps to protect both in crisis situations.

International activities:

The department provides training of clinical interns and residents from foreign countries: Georgia, Poland.

The personnel of the department participated in the international scientific conferences, congresses, symposiums in many countries of Europe, Asia, North and South Americas and was long-term trained in the best clinical fetal medicine sites worldwide.
