History Data:
The Department was founded in January 1980, by the Resolution of
the Cabinet Ministers of Ukraine for advanced training of
doctors-therapeutics of Kyivska oblast. The first name of this
Department was the Department of Therapy No.3. In January 1990, the
Department of Therapy was renamed the Department of Therapy and
Rheumatology.
D.D.Drozdov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, was the
first head of the Department of Therapy and Rheumatology. Since
January 1990, V.M. Kovalenko, Doctor of Medical Sciences,
Professor, Corresponding Member of the AMS of Ukraine, Merited
Worker of Sciences and Technology of Ukraine, was appointed as the
head of the Department of Therapy and Rheumatology.
From the moment of its foundation, the Department of Therapy has
the Clinical Hospital No.6 as its academic basis. And since 1994,
the Clinical Hospital No.7 of Sviatoshyansky region is its academic
basis too. There are two big lecture halls for 50 and 60 places, 5
academic rooms and a laboratory at the Department.
The Department provides courses of specialization in
Rheumatology, pre-certification courses of Therapy and
Rheumatology, special courses in some topics of Therapy and
Rheumatology, training courses for internships on major Internal
diseases.
The Department provided advanced training guest-courses in
different cities, including Tashkent, Buhara, Andizhjan, Samarkand,
Daugavpils, Sevastopol, Chernigiv, Lutsk, Zhytomyr and others. More
than 5,000 doctors were trained and improved their professional
skills at the Department of Therapy and Rheumatology.
Teachers of the Department worked out special academic plans,
curricula and computer test programs for specialization in
Rheumatology, pre-certification courses of Therapy and Rheumatology
and topical advanced courses for therapists. The teachers of the
Department took part also in development of programs, curricula and
computer tests for therapists and interns in therapy.
The head of Department, Professor V.M. Kovalenko and Professor
N.M. Shuba there have published textbooks “Rheumatology”, “Internal
Diseases” for doctors and intern-students, methodological
recommendations on questions of diagnostics and treatment of
internal diseases, 22 monographs, 11 reference books. The studying
process at the Department has been computerized and new
pharmacotherapeutical, clinical-laboratory and instrumental
technology were introduced.
Teaching and Methodological Work:
The following courses are conducted at the
Department:
Specialization: specialization course in
Rheumatology;
Pre-certification: pre-certification course in
Rheumatology;
Thematic specialization: on Rheumatology for
therapists.
Internship: “Internal diseases”.
Preparation of clinical residents and aspirants is
conducted.
Scientific Research Activities:
Major directions of scientific activity of the Department
are:
- Modification of treatment of rheumatologycal diseases with
autoimmune and immuno-complex mechanisms of development.
- Development of methods of diagnostics and treatment of
osteoporosis of patients with rheumatologycal disease.
- Substantiation and introduction system enzymotherapy in
complex treatment programs with rheumatologycal patients.
- Assessments of clinical effectiveness of new antirheumatic
drugs.
The results of scientific research have been reported on the 41
international conferences, 123 Ukrainian congresses, and 181
regional conferences. Since 1980 there have been published 24
monographs, 27 methodological recommendations and above 600
scientific works.
Since the period of foundation of the Department, 11 Doctoral
and 34 Candidate’s theses were defended.
The teachers of the Department took active part in organization
of the National Congress of Rheumatologists of Ukraine, schools of
Rheumatologists.
Clinical work:
The City Clinical Hospital No. 6 and the City Clinical Hospital
No. 7 are the clinical base of the Department. Since 1980, more
than 82 thousand patients at the clinical base of the Department
have been treated. The teaching staff members rendered their
consultative work in and out of clinical bases for more than 5,000
of patients; they delivered 638 sanitary aviation circuits.
The Department is the basis of the Association of
Rheumatologists and Association of systemic enzymotherapy. The
school of Rheumatologists is conducted annually for
specialists-rheumatologists of Ukraine. The “Arthrological club”
for patients with musculoskeletal system diseases was established.
Professor V.N. Kovalenko is the President of the Association of
Rheumatologists of Ukraine, the Member of European and World
Antirheumatic League, Deputy Head of the Board of Administration of
scientific societies of cardiologists and therapeutists, the Member
of Editorial Board of scientific journals “Ukrainian Cardiological
Journal”, “Ukrainian Medical Journal”, “Pharmaceutical Journal”,
the Head of Editorial Board of scientific journal “Ukrainian
Rheumatologycal Journal”. Professor O.P. Bortkevich is the Leading
Rheumatologist of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine.
International activities:
The Department has permanent contacts with the Association of
Rheumatologists of Great Britain, Scientific and Research
Institutes of Rheumatology of Russia and Poland.
