History Data:

The physiotherapy department of Kyiv Institute for Advanced training of Physicians was founded in 1944. Professor O.R.Kirichinskiy was the founder and the first teacher at the Department.

O.R.Kirichinskiy contributed greatly to the development and organization of physiotherapy not only in Ukraine but in the whole Soviet Union. He wrote monographs (“Reflex physiotherapy”, “Neuroses of visceral genesis”, “Physiotherapy of gynecology deseases” etc.) and these books are  classical and did not lose their importance at present time.

From 1961 the department was headed by the disciples of Professor O.R.Kirichinskiy – Professors V.Y.Osipov (1961-1963), S.M.Finogenov (1963-1971), in 1972 department was headed by Professor Volodymyr V. Orzheshkovskiy.

From 1974 the department began to carry out physiotherapy and health resort therapy courses out of Kyiv, and later the courses of advanced training for faculty members of higher educational institutions and Institutes for Advanced training of Physicians.

Under the supervision of Professor V.V.Orzheshkovskiy the teaching staff members of the chair worked out the problems of physiotherapy of joint and spine deseases, hypertension and hypotension, they studied new physiotherapy methods (DMV-, SMV-therapy, turpentine baths, amplipulse-therapy, magnetotherapy, ultrasound-therapy etc.). The number of monographs have been published. The book “Clinical physiotherapy” has been the basic manual for practical physicians up to the present.

In 1992 the  department was headed by Professor Ivan. Z. Samosyuk.

In 1999 it was renamed the Department of Medical Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy and Health Resort Therapy; medical physical culture course was joined and the branch of Medical Rehabilitation Problem Institute was opened in Truskavets. The branch is headed by the Hero of Ukraine Professor V.I. Kozyavkin.

Specialization and topical advanced training courses are carried out by the chair not only for physiotherapeutists and health resort therapeutists but also for physicians of different specialities.

Besides the physicians of Ukraine, clinical residents and post-graduate students from Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Estonia, Kazakhstan and other countries are trained.

There are remarkable facilities for educational and curative work at the chair. The main bases of the department are Kyiv hospital of Great Patriotic War invalides, city balneary of joint-stock company "Ukrprofzdravnitsa", ”Govten” and scientific methodic centre "Medical new technologies".

The special conditions are created for training doctors at the chair branch, on the base of Medical Rehabilitation Problem Institute, which is one of the best European rehabilitation centers.

Scientific investigation direction of the department for 2007-2011 is “Medical Rehabilitation Patients with Discirculatory Encephalopaty”. Lately, the scientists of the chair have received 10 patents of Ukraine for the inventions, have issued 15 monographs.

In training physicians, the main attention is paid to mastering modern theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills of physiotherapy techniques, including various variants of electrotreatment, magneto- and lazerotherapy, therapy by electromagnetic millimeter (WHF), centimetric (SМW) and decimeter (DМW) waves etc. All these procedures should be performed by physicians independently.

New forms of training are appreciated by physicians, for instance, comprehensive seminars in certain curriculum themes are carried out with participation of associated departments, leading specialists as well as appropriate specialists.

The future of health protection is an integrative medicine, that is, combination of European (allopathic) and natural (acupuncture, physiopuncture and other variants of nonpharmacological treatment, first of all, physiotherapy and resort factors) medicine. The scientists of the chair have followed this principle for 80 years of the chair´s existence. It determines the basic research directions in the future.

Teaching and methodological work:

The courses of training will be carried out at the chair:

Specializations: in physiotherapy (3 months), medical physical culture (3 months);

Pre-certification: in physiotherapy, medical physical culture;

Topical Advanced Training: “Medical rehabilitation of patients with diseases of nervous and locomotor system”, “Physical rehabilitation of the patients”, “Medical physical culture and massage in medical rehabilitation”;

Information and Traineeship: “New technologies in rehabilitation”.

The training at the courses of specialization, pre-certification, topical advanced training (including manual therapy, cranio-sacral therapy), information and traineeship on a self-supporting basis is possible.

Clinical residents and post-graduate students study at the Department.

Scientific activities:

The scientific research direction of the department is modern electromagnetic and laseromagnetic therapy methods in complex treatment of patients with cerebral vascular pathology. Lately, teaching staff members of the chair have received 1 patents of Ukraine for the inventions, have issued 17 monographs.

Clinical work

The teaching staff members of the chair provide consultations on physiotherapy for patients in Kyiv hospital of Great Patriotic War invalids.

International activities:

The chair takes part in working out scientific programs in common with Poland electropuncture society and Belostok rehabilitation center.

Clinical residents and post-graduate students from Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Estonia, Kazakhstan and other countries study at the chair.
