History Data:
The Department of Psychiatry of the National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P.L.Shupyk was organized in 1927. Its first head was Candidate of Medical Sciences Illia O. Zalkind.
In 1944, a famous psychiatrist, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of USSR, Professor Victor P. Protopopov became the Head of the Department. Since this year, the regular teaching of doctors at specialization, general and topical advanced training courses started.
Since 1956, the work of the Department was headed by Professor Yosyp A. Polishchuk, the disciple of Professor Protopopov. The main direction of scientific studies in those years was studying of pathogenesis of endogenous psychoses.
In 1979-1986, Professor Vladyslav S. Shaposhnikov was the Head of the Department.
Since 1988, the work of the Department is headed by Professor Valeriy M. Kuznetsov, the disciple of Professor Y.A. Polishchuk.
The following training and teaching courses are held at the Department: Specialization in Psychiatry, Internship in Psychiatry, Pre-certification Courses, Topical Advanced Training in Psychiatry.
During different years the employees of the Department were: Professors Kovalenko P.I., Bulakhova L.A., Assistant Professors Horodkova T.M., Sagan O.M., Zinchenko S.M., Vidrenko A.Ye., Savchenko V.P.
During the period of 1945–2008, 5,943 physicians received postgraduate training at the Department.
During the period of functioning of the Department, more than 530 scientific papers, including a text-book “Psychiatry”, as well as 10 manuals and monographs were published. 4 Doctoral and 23 Candidate theses were accomplished ad defended.
The teaching staff of the Department developed and published educational programs and curricula for the courses of specialization (2008), pre-certification courses in psychiatry (2008), collection of testing tasks (2002) and Internship in psychiatry (2008).
The scientific work of the Department is closely related to current inquires of the theory and practice of psychiatry and included into the Complex Program “Nation’s Health”.
Teaching and Methodological Work:
The following courses are conducted at the Department:
Specialization: in Psychiatry.
Pre-certification: a course in Psychiatry; a course in Psychotherapy.
Topical Advanced Training: “Modern evaluation of main mental diseases from ICD-10 perspective”; “Psychotherapy in clinical practice of psychiatrist”.
BI training course in psychiatry; training course in family medicine; training course in urgent and emergency medical care; training course in neuropathology;
Clinical residencies and post-graduate education. The training course for clinical residents (clinical residents), postgraduate students and magisters are carried out.
Scientific Research Activities:
The scheduled scientific work, “Diagnostic criteria of principle mental diseases at different stages and their influence on the choice of therapeutic approaches”, planned for 5 years, is implemented now at the Department. The scientific research work of the Department was included into the list of works of the Interdisciplinary Complex Program “Nation’s Health”.
Clinical work:
Clinical-consult work is carried out at 5 basic clinical wards of the Department (Kyiv town clinical psychoneurology clinic No1). The head of the Department is a consultant psychiatrist at the treatment-invigorative Unit of the Cabinet of Ministers and Republic Polyclinic “OHMATDYT”, Chief children psychiatry of the Health Ministry of Ukraine, Chief editor of the journal “Mental Health”. The Department’s staff members provide consultative assistance for patients in different mental health institutions of Kyiv and Kyivska oblast, and also in sanitary aviation, are the members of the Board of Ukrainian Psychiatric Association
International activities:
The Department is a clinical base for approbation of new drug agents (firm “Quintiles”).
