History Data: The idea of creating the clinical base for healthcare professionals postgraduate education in The Ukrainian Institute of Clinical Medicine belongs to academician professor Strazhesko N.D. – founder and first director of this establishment. The Department of Internal Diseases-II of Kiev Institute of Healthcare Postgraduate Education was founded in 1938. It worked until 1941, thus, the beginning of World War II. 1949 the necessity of the Department revival emerged. Organization and leading work in the Academic Council of Kiev Institute of Healthcare Postgraduate Education was proposed to professor Strazhesko’s pupil – professor Mikhnev Anatoly Lvovich, who was the head of the Department from 1949 until he died 3 October 1970. In 1952 professor Mikhnev became the director of The Institute of Clinical Medicine and monitored the career of 37 professors. He also worked as Chief of the Council of Ukrainian Fellowship of Internists, member of Soviet Society of Cardiology and member of The Cardiology Committee Of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. For his scientific, clinical and social merits professor Mikhnev was granted the title “Honored Scientist of USSR” and orders of Lenin, Red Star, and – twice – Order Of Honor. During Great Patriotic War many a member of the Department served as army healthcare workers in the Army hospitals and on the battlefields. In 1969 Department of Internal Diseases-II was transformed into Cardiology Department. In 1971 after professor Mikhnev the heads of the Department were professor V.A.Pilipenko (1971-1982), ass. professor G.A.Dravert (1982), ass. professor V.I.Vinnichuk (1983) and ass. professor V.S.Malinovskaya (1983-1985). Since 1985 the head of the Department is Prof. Bobrov Vladimir Alexeyevich, PhD, Fellow Correspondent of Ukrainian National and Medical Academy of Sciences, Fellow of The European Society of Cardiology. Professor Bobrov is the Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine since 1990. In 1991 he was elected as a Fellow Correspondent of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in 1993 – as a Fellow Correspondent of Medical Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in 1995 – as an Academician of the Higher Education of Ukraine. In 1994 professor was granted the Strazhesko Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. 1994-1995 professor Bobrov worked as the Minister of Healthcare of Ukraine; 1989-1998 – as the Director of Ukrainian Institute of Cardiology named after N.D.Strazhesko. Currently professor Bobrov is the member of the Council of National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P.L.Shupik (NMAPE) and the member of Faculty of Internal Diseases Council. He is also a member of Ukrainian Society of Cardiology Presidium, Editors’ Board of “Ukrainian Journal of Cardiology”, “Healthcare journal (Lechebnoye Delo)”, “Medical Referative Journal”, “Archive Of Clinical and Experimental Medicine", "Journal Of Fundamental and Clinical Medicine", as well as of Russian journals “Cardiology” and “Therapeutic Archive”. In 1993 due to professor Bobrov’s achievements he was acknowledged as a Fellow of European Society of Cardiology. He is also elected as Active Member of New York Academy of Sciences (1996), International Fellow of the Council on Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association (1997) and Academician of International Informatization Academy of UNESCO (1997). Professor Bobrov is an author of over 850 scientific publications (over 200 of which published beyond the borders of Ukraine), 30 monographs, study programs and textbooks for postgraduate education of internists and cardiologists. He has 17 patents. Under professor Bobrov’s supervision over 120 dissertations were written. Since January 1993 department of cardiology changed its name to department of cardiology and functional diagnosis for the department of functional diagnosis was united with it. At the department of functional diagnosis worked such scientists as professor Furkalo N.K., who was the head of the Department 1979-1993, professor Stadnyuk L.A. (1991-2001), assistant professors Alexandrova L.A., Bilinsky E.A., Bezyuk N.N. Over the time the Department existed, its fellows issued 73 monographs, 41 textbooks, 1654 scientific publications, 96 methodic recommendations, 40 information sheets, 58 rational propositions, 34 author’s patents and 9 priority discovery certificates. They participated in many international and national congresses. 118 doctor’s and 235 candidate’s dissertations were written and acknowledged. Teaching and Methodological Activities: The Department provides the following postgraduate courses: Specialization: Clinical Cardiology (3 months), Functional Diagnosis (4 months); Qualification Upgrade: Clinical Cardiology, Functional Diagnosis; Thematic Upgrade: “Actual Problems in Clinical Cardiology”, "Clinical and Functional Diagnosis in Heart Clinic", “Actual Problems in Clinical Pharmacology in Heart Clinic”, “Actual Problems In Clinical Arrhythmology”. Scientific Research Activities: In 2005 department registered planned “Stress induced ischemia in constellation of CAD, hypertension and diabetes mellitus: mechanisms, diagnostic criteria, risk stratification, therapy background”. Clinical work: Department assistants consult the patients and take part in the work of the following departments of Ukrainian Institute of Cardiology of N.D.Strazhesko: essential hypertension, symptomatic hypertension, coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis, valve and myocardium diseases, heart arrhythmias departments. We possess the ability to perform the following diagnostic techniques: heart ultrasound, veloergometry, 24-hours ECG and BP monitoring, electrophysiology heart examination. In the Institute we conduct X-ray contrast heart and coronary vessels examination, transluminal percutaneous angioplasty and coronary stenting. Department assistants are official cardiology consultants of medical aviation of Ukrainian Healthcare Ministry, as well as of Central Ukrainian Border Troops Hospital, Internal Cases Ministry and Ukrainian Security Service Hospital, Women Health Center and Kiev City Diagnostic Center. International activities: Fellows of the Department annually take part in the congresses of European Society of Cardiology, as well as ESC training programs including Kiev. We actively co-operate with foreign pharmaceutical companies in new treatment methods studies. 17 foreign clinical interns proceed with postgraduate education in our Department.
