History Data
The history of the Department of Urology goes back to 1923, to the course of advanced training in urology for surgeons, dermatologists and doctors of other specialities; and in 1929 it was created as an independent one among other departments of the Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians. Prof. Andronik A. Chayka, the founder of Ukrainian scientific school in urology, was its organizer and the first Head of the Department. The pre-war period was characterized by an essential contribution of the department’s scientists to the treasury of national science. The teaching staff members of the department investigated the following problems: pathologically movable kidney, prostate adenoma, acute and chronic pyelonephritis, genitourinary tuberculosis, traumatic lesions of organs of genitourinary apparatus.
The scientists of the department made a great contribution into the development of medicine during the war period, and some of them proved to be talented organizers of military medicine. The name of the leading surgeon of the first Ukrainian front evacuation centre, Mayor-General of Medical Service, the Head of the Urological Department, Prof. A.A. Chayka went down in history for ever.
New qualitative changes took place at the department as a structural unit of the Academy in 1996, when the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, on May 13, 1996, passed a Resolution “The formation of the Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education”, celebrating the 5th anniversary of independence. According to this resolution, an educational establishment of a new type and a higher (IV) level of accreditation was formed on its basis – the Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, the only one in Ukraine.
Today, P.L. Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education has become the Ukraine’s leading centre for postgraduate education and a powerful research centre. It includes 70 various departments and courses. About 500 staff members, among them there are 120 Professors and Doctors of Medical Sciences. 320 Candidates of Medical Sciences work here, what makes the best index in Ukraine. The Department of Urology is one of the leading departments of the Academy.

Scientific Research Activities:
Subject: “Peculiarities of clinical course and results of treating patients with purulent obstructive pyelonephritis”. The work is to be finished in 2009.
The aim of our work is to study blood circulation, functional processes and pathological changes in kidneys in case of renal colic and after urodynamic restoration. The course and progression of functional and pathological alterations in a kidney are of particular interest for researchers.
This scientific work is innovative as the patient, suffering from renal colic, independently on the level of obstruction and its progression rate, has venous hypertension. 3 stages of functional and pathological changes in kidney in case of renal colic will be described for the first time, as well as the necessity of timely elimination of acute and chronic disorders of urodynamics are scientifically substantiated for the first time.
The work on this scientific problem has taken already two years. There has been studied the literature on the subject of the scientific work and the methods of patient’s checkup have been worked out according to the plan. Currently, 15 healthy people (control group) and 30 patients with acute and chronic disorders of urodynamics before and after restoration of urodynamics (independent stone elimination, lithotripsy, operation) have been examined.
All patients with renal colic have local renal venous hypertension. Testified results prove that there is a sudden decrease of blood flow and functional renal processes in acute and chronic disorders of urodynamics. There have been published 5 articles in collections of scientific works, medical journals and a chapter in the monograph “Primary and Urgent Medical Aids” for the last 2 years. 2 licenses on invention have been registered and obtained. The results of research work were implemented in base clinical departments. There are 10 acts of implementation at the department. Associate Professor O. Yu. Scherbak defended his Doctor’s Thesis in 2001, Assistant A.I. Boyko defended his Candidate’s Thesis in 2003. Previously the teaching staff members of the department had been working at the subject “Pre-stone nephrolithiasis: aetiology, diagnostics, and treatment”. Based on obtained data, pre-stone nephrolithiasis, its aetiology, diagnosis and treatment were described for the first time. According to scientific research work of the department, 4 inventions, 11 rationalization propositions were registered and 14 articles were published in collections of scientific works and journals.
Clinical work:
Medical staff rounds of patients are carried out by a Professor and an Assistant Professor. Clinical, scientific and pathologoanatomic conferences, consultations of patients are held under their guidance. The teaching staff members work in the operating room, daily examine patients that were hospitalized by ambulance, provide consultations for patients at other departments, and provide ambulance and medical aviation care.
International activities:
One foreigner is taking a clinical residential course at the department.
