History Data:
The Department was organized in 1955 by the outstanding scientist, academician M. Amosov as a department of thoracic surgery. This was justified by the necessity to teach surgeons some complex methods of operations on organs of thoracic cavity, mastering of methods for the patients’ examination.
In 1976, the Department was oriented to thoracoabdominal and vascular surgery. It was headed by academician Olexander Oleksiyovych Shalimov. The directions of the department activity during this period were: research of digestive apparatus and cardiovascular system diseases, development of new methods of surgical treatment. From 1980 to 1992, the Department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor S.O. Shalimov.
From 1992 to 2007 the Department headed by the known scientist Valeriy Feodosiyovych Sayenko, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Director of the Institute of Surgery and Transplantology AMS of Ukraine, Corresponding Member NAS and AMS of Ukraine, USSR State Prizewinner. Since 2007 it’s headed by Bronislav S. Polinkevych, Doctor of Medical Science, Ukraine State Prizewinner.

Scientific Research Activities:
The collective of the department investigates such scientific directions:
- Development and advancing of methods for organ saving operations with vagotomy usage, and the methods of prophylaxis, diagnostic and treatment of post-vagotomic syndromes
- Development and advancing of methods of small and large intestines operation
- Study of pathogenesis and development of methods of treatment for surgical sepsis, preventive usage of antibiotic in the surgery
- To investigate the problems of liver, heart, pancreas transplantation
- Surgical treatment of morbid obesity and metabolic disorders (bariatric surgery)
- Developing principles of cholelithiasis treatment, acute and chronic pancreatitis, studying the problems of laparoscopic and mini-invasive surgery
- Angiography and endovascular surgery.
During the educational process, the members of teaching staff of the department widely apply the modern technologies of training: computers, multimedia, algorithms, situational problems, standards of practical skills.
Members of the department’s teaching staff published 25 monographies, more than 1000 scientific articles, and obtained 105 copyright certificates and patents.
Since 1976, there have been prepared 10 doctors and 20 Candidates of Medical Sciences.
Clinical work:
Since 1972, the main basis of the Department is the Clinic of the Institute of Surgery and Transplantology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (400 beds). The following kinds of treatment are provided there:
- Organ-saving surgeries with the usage of vagotomy, and also methods of prophylaxis, diagnostics and treatment of post vagotomic syndromes;
- Small and large intestines surgery, surgical sepsis treatment;
- Surgery of morbid obesity and diabetes of 2 type;
- Liver, heart and pancreas transplantation;
- Treatment of cholelithiasis, acute and chronic pancreatitis, laparoscopy and mini-invasive intervention;
- Annually more than 4,000 surgeries are performed by the members of the department, and about 5,000 consultations are given.
International activities:
The Department has business contacts with the International Association of Bariatric Surgeons, the International Association of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons, and with the M.I. Pyrohov International Association of Surgeons.
