History Data:

In 1918, in the year of foundation of the Kyiv Clinical Institute for Advanced Training of Doctors (now the P. Shupyk Kyiv Academy of Postgraduate Education), the section of otolaryngology with the ambulance section was founded in the Institute.

In 1922 the Department of Otolaryngology was founded, headed by Prof. S. Stavraki (І876-1936) – the student of М. Volkovych.

In 1930 the Department was headed by Assistant Professor and later Professor М. Harshak, also the student of Prof. М. Volkovych, who used to keep the traditions, particularly in studying a widespread disease at that time – scleroma of respiratory tract. For the first time in Ukraine М. Harshak developed the methods of treatment of larynx cancer – complete ablation of larynx, and partial resection of larynx (1933), and studied their further results.

From 1944 till 1964 Prof. O. Kolomiychenko was the Head of the department. During this period, he developed and improved the methods of post-graduate education of otolaryngologists.

In 1955 O. Kolomiychenko published his work «Ear Diseases» in Ukrainian – the manual for primary specialisation practitioners and for village general practitioners. He was the first to implement surgery microscope in Ukraine; he developed surgeries of patients with otosclerosis, improving their hearing (Lenin Prize, 1964), and this information was covered in his monograph published in 1962. More than 1,000 of such surgeries were performed in the Otolaryngology clinic during this period. The department became a methodological centre for education of specialists for the whole former USSR.

The peak of О. Kolomiychenko’s activity was the foundation of Kyiv Scientific-Research Institute of Otolaryngology, later bearing his name.

In 1964 the Department was headed by Prof. S. Mostovy, together with R. Abizov, K. Marchenko, О. Momot and А. Laiko and under his supervision, the number of manuals and monographs was published, and it had made an essential contribution into the improvement of educational process, raising the level of knowledge of otolaryngologists and raising the level of ENT patient’s treatment. He studied in details the question of metastasis of the throat cancer into regional nodes of neck and laryngeal space.

From 1975 till 1991 the department was headed by Prof. О. Evdoschenko, who also kept the traditions of Kyiv School of Otolaryngologists, having a huge experience of scientific, educational and doctor’s work. She made fundamental clinical and experimental otolaryngological studies of organ transformations of patients with virus influenza, and made an experimental–histological study of cicatrisation of stapes fracture of patients with otosclerosis. Under supervision of Prof. О. Evdoschenko and Assistant Professor М. Mel’nyk, the new methods of diagnostics and treatment of latent otoantritis, namely drainage method had been studied.

In 1991 Prof. B. Is’kiv was elected as the Head of the department - being the author of the book on tympanoplasty and the student of Prof. O. Evdoschenko. During this period the system of treatment of patients with chronic purulent otitis media was developed. He conducted experimental histological studies of transplantation of different tissues (fascia, venous wall, skin transplantants, cheek tunica mucosa) for creation of a new tympanic membrane; the phases of transplantation and complications, resulting in experimental tympanoplasty, were studied; the recommendations on clinical use of the experiment results were elaborated.

A new direction in otosurgery - meatotympanoplastics - and its different variants were developed, when along with formation of a new tympanum the walls of external acoustic duct are restored, which may often be ruined by pathologic process or due to surgery.

This new line of investigation became traditional and was applied in training process in other clinics as well. The III-type modification of tympanoplastics was proposed with restoring back wall of external acoustic duct, the effectiveness of which had been proven by electro-acoustic experiment and clinical data (Assistant Professor V. Shkorbotun), the symptoms and methods of postponed meatotympanoplastics were developed by Assistant О. Peleshenko. The process of engraftment of auditory ossicle with autofibrine-glue fixing was investigated by H. Panahi.

The following famous scientists-otolaryngologists studied and worked at the department: Professors І. Kurilin, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor А. Makuha, Assistant Professor М. Sanotsky, Assistant Professor N. Manzhura, І. Yashan, А. Laiko, А. Kosakovsky.

Fundamental study of oncology diagnostics and treatment was conducted at the department, further highlighted in Doctor’s Dissertation of R. Abizov (1990).

Diapositive films, albums and video films had been created for better study of new methods of treatment.

The teaching staff members of the Department (Prof. B. Iskiv, Assistant Prof. М. Melnyk) together with the leading otolaryngologists of Ukraine had compiled educational plans and specialisation (internist’s) program. Educational plans and pre-certification course programs had been compiled in otolaryngology (B. Iskiv, К. Marchenko) and in oncology (B. Iskiv, R. Abizov).

Four computer programs were created for certification of interns, specialists in otolaryngology and oncology.

Since 2003, the department has been headed by Professor R. Abizov, the author of an unique manual of oncology in otolaryngology in CIS. Under his supervision, unique surgeries on tumour had been developed and performed.
