History Data:
The Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology No. 1 was organized in 1975, it was named the department of traumatology and military-field surgery for advanced training of traumatologist and military doctors in traumatology and military-field surgery. The first head of the department was Prof. V. M. Levenets and the first clinical base was located in the department of traumatology (80 hospital beds) of the hospital No. 15, the city of Kyiv.
Among the first teaching staff members, those worth mentioning are: A.A. Kuzylo, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, A.P. Yurchenko, Candidate of Medical Sciences, H.I. Hertsen, Candidate of Medical Sciences, V.V. Plyatsko, Candidate of Medical Sciences; S.P. Tvardovska, Candidate of Medical Sciences; later – V.I. Levytsky, Candidate of Medical Sciences. For different reasons the following lecturers left the Department: A.A. Kuzylo, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor, V.A. Reyzner, Associate Professor, A.P. Yurchenko, Associate Professor, S.P. Tvardovsky, Assistant Professor V.I. Levytsky, Candidate of Medical Sciences, V.V. Plyatsko, Associate Professor, V.M. Lopushan, Associate Professor, P.M. Teaching and Methodological Work:
The following courses are delivered in the department:
Specialization: in orthopedics and traumatology, in pediatric orthopedics and traumatology.
Pre-certification: in orthopedics and traumatology.
Training: Diseases and lesions of knee joint Arthroskopy, Modern methods of Diagnosis and Treatment of Joint Diseased (for therapeutist), Deformative Arthrosis of Large Joints Compound lesions of bones and joints.
Internship.
Clinical residencies and post-graduate education.
Scientific Research Activities:
Since its creation, the scientists of the department completed 6 scientific research work, namely: “Multiple lesions of locomotor apparatus” (1978 – 1981); “Prophylaxis and treatment of pyo-inflammatory complications of multiple and associated damages” (1982 - 1985); “Deformative arthrosis of Stump and knee joints” (1989 - 1990); “Improvement of diagnosis and treatment of early forms of deformative arthrosis” (1991 - 1993); “Improvement of endoprothesis of stump join” (1996 - 200). Currently, the scientists have been investigating the problem concerning” Instability of knee joint” (2001 - 2005).
As to the Scientific Research Work, the teaching staff members of the Department published 978 scientific works, including 15 monographs, 12 educational manuals, 8 lectures (Central Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians); 25 methodological recommendations of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine, 52 copyright certificates were obtained. 15 Doctors and 44 Candidate’s Theses were defended and 8 Candidate’s Theses are in the process of preparation.
The most important achievements of the Department are:
- Development of ways and methods of diagnosis and treatment of pyainflammatory and thromboembolitic complications;
- Detection of developmental mechanism of preclinical forms of deformative arthrosis, its diagnosis and treatment;
- Diagnosis and operative arthroskopy of knee and shoulder joints in case of their damage and disease;
- Elaboration and implementation in practice of reconstructive-restorative operations in case of deformative coxarthrosis, lesions and diseases of stump and knee joints;
- Elaboration and improvement of conservative pathogenetic methods of treatment of deformative arthrosis;
- Development of classification of compound lesions of large joints and their treatment;
- Development of classification of pre-arthrosis conditions as well as deformative arthrosis af large joints and their treatment;
- Elaboration of classification of clinical course of multiple lesions of locomotor apparatus and recommendations on using extrafocal osteosynthesis;
- Introduction in practice, in cooperation with Kyiv Scientific-Practical Association “ETAYON” and English-American-German Concern “Biomet”, of methods of total cement and without cement endoprothesis of stump and knee joints;
- Holding International Scientific-Practical seminars on training of orthopedists-traumatologists of Ukraine by using total endoprosthetics of stump and knee joint.
Clinical work:
The department has 3 bases: 2 departments of traumatology and arthropedics (60 hospital beds) in the Kyiv Clinical Hospital No.8, the traumatological department of the Clinical Hospital “Medical campus” (50 hospital beds) and 2 departments of children and teenager orthopedics (each of them having 40 beds) in the Institute of traumatology and orthopedics of AMS of Ukraine.
The following ways and methods of treatment are performed in the clinics of the departments, the hospital No.8 and No.6:
- All types of periosteal, intraosteal, extrafocal, mini-invasive osteosynthesis in bone fractures.
- Free bone plasty and autoplasty with transplants conserving blood circulation in case of non-consolidation of bone fractures.
- Diagnosis and surgical arthroscopy, reconstructive and restorative operations, cement, without cement, hybrid endoprothetics.
- Corrective, stabilizing and decompressive operations in case of lesions and diseases of the vertebral column and scoliosis.
The teaching staff members of the department perform over 1200 operative interventions per year and provide consultations for more than 5000 patients.
International activities:
The department maintains professional business relations with the concern “Biomet”. Basic training seminars on total endoprothetics of knee joint were carried out for the first time in Ukraine in 1995 and 1996 in cooperation with the concern. In 2002 the department was awarded with International Diploma for holding basic training courses on endoprothesis of stump and knee joints as well as for implementing updated constructions of endoprothesis in Ukraine.
