History Data:
The Ophthalmology Department was established in 1918 by Prof. N Levytskyi, the first director of the Clinical Institute, who was running it until 1929. During 1929-1946, Prof. A. Vasiutynskyi, the well-known author of the “Course in Operative Ophthalmology for Doctors” and the inventor of the first huge magnet for removing foreign intraocular matters, the first of that kind in former USSR, was the head of the department. Between 1946 and 1953, Prof. F. Yuzefova had been performing the duties of the head of the department. In 1953, Assistant. M. Kuda assumed these responsibilities and in 1954 she was replaced by T. Herasymenko, the department’s Assistant Professor. In 1964, Prof. V. Shevaliov became the head of the department, who moved from Odesa to Kyiv at that time. Shevaliov was the leading expert in former USSR in the treatment of retinal detachment and used the most advanced technologies. Also he was the author of the book “Operative Treatment of Retina Separation” (1965), and wrote a monograph in the replacement of the stenon duct during the treatment of xerosis (the edition of this book in English was published in the USA in 1962). Since 1978, Prof. N. Serhienko has been running the department.
He is the Doctor of Medical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, State Prize Laureate of Ukraine, Merited Worker of Ukraine in Science and Engineering, and the Leading Ophthalmologist of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine. Prof. Serhienko is the author of two monographs: “Ophthalmologic Optics” (1982, 1991), and “Intraocular Correction” (1990).
In 1988, the building project of the clinical ophthalmologic hospital “Ocular Microsurgery Center” was finished and with the capacity of 170 beds, it became the undisputable leader in Ukraine as for the number of operations performed annually (9,000-13,000).
Teaching and Methodological Work:
The department trains 15-24 residents and fellows and 40-100 interns a year. It has educational facilities that include four lecture halls and an auditorium that can accommodate 100 persons. Also, its operation rooms are equipped with microscopes linked to television monitors, allowing students to study operational procedures and techniques effectively.
The department offers the following courses:
Specializations: in ophthalmology and in pediatric ophthalmology.
Pre-certification: in ophthalmology and pediatric ophthalmology.
Topical Advanced: in optometry and contact correction, in eye microsurgery with artificial lens implantation, and in ophthalmologic urgent care.
Internships: in ophthalmology and in pediatric ophthalmology.
Scientific Research Activities:
The main line of investigations of the department is the development of some new methods of cataract extraction and of lens implantation. Prof N. Serhienko used to make numerous reports at international congresses and to perform demonstrative lens implantation operations at university clinics in Belgrad, Zagreb, Baniya-Luky, and Budapest. In 1988, the group of ophthalmologists, headed by Prof. N. Serhienko, was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Engineering for their results in the introduction of intraocular correction in Ukraine.
In the past 20 years, four doctoral theses have been defended within the department: in 1989, Z. Veselovska, who manages the Department of Ophthalmology at the Institute of National Medicine, defended her thesis; in 1990, Y. Kondratenko and K. Pavlyuchenko, who heads the Department of Ophthalmology at Donetsk Medical University; and in 2003, P. Fedirko.
The following scientists have got their candidate’s degree at the department: in 1980, G. Aliev, leading the Department of Ophthalmology at Dagestan Medical Institute; N. Denysiuk (1981); Y. Kondratenko (1983); B. Moyseenko (1988), H. Ammenko (1988), Z. Trifonov (1988, Bulgaria), L. Bakbardina (1988), and N. Pasechnikova (1988); E. Kuznetz (1989); V. Ustimenko (1990); N. Novitskiy (2002); I. Shargorodska (2003).
The regular participation in international conferences and their organization signifies outstanding scientific prestige of the department, as it shows for example four Polish-Ukrainian conferences, held in Lyublin (1997), Truskavetz (1999), in 2001 in Warsaw (2001), and in Kyiv (2003).
Clinical work:
The clinical base of the department includes the Ocular Microsurgery Center – with 180 beds and consultative polyclinic and the City Clinical Hospital No. 6 “Medical campus” – with 40 beds. The surgical activity of the department staff for last year made up 90% of the total number of operations (11,925), performed within the clinic. Operative intervention is carried out both in hospitals and in out-patients department. The department staff also performs consultative work at the Ocular Microsurgery Center. The total number of consultations last year made up 9,869.
International activities:
Scholarly research is carried out by means of international grants. The department works with the Ukrainian Scientific and Technical Center (USTC) (project 418), and collaborates with a number of foreign institutions, for example with the Radiation Center at the Institute of Occupational Hygiene (Columbia University, USA), where the influence of radiation on the organ of vision of liquidators of CHAES damage consequences is being studied.
