History Data

The Department of Neurosurgery was founded in 1945 on the base of the Kyiv Psycho-Neurological Institute, which was reorganized into the Kyiv Neurosurgery Institute of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine in 1950. It was headed by professor Olexandr I. Arutiunov (1945-1963). Professor Arutiunov was a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, an organizer of the neurosurgical service in Ukraine; he was a director of the M.N. Burdenko Institute of Neurosurgery. The main spheres of his scientific interests were: head tumour injuries, vascular surgery, pain syndrome, spinal column pathology, gunshot wound consequence, craniocerebral trauma. He was the founder of Ukrainian school in neurosurgery.

In 1954?1955, the department was headed by A.P. Romodanov, who was combining his jobs. From 1963 to 1993 the Institute of Kyiv Neurosurgery Institute was headed by the member of the Academy of Medical Science of the USSR, Professor A.P. Romodanov. The main scientific interests: organization of neurosurgical help in Ukraine, cerebrum and spinal cord tumours, children’s CNS tumours, geriatric neurosurgery, craniocerebral injury and it’s consequence, epilepsy, vascular pathology of CNS.

From January, 1960, to July, 1993, the department was headed by Professor Georgiy A. Pedachenko, Candidate of Medical Sciences (1954), senior staff scientist (1959), Assistant Professor (1959), Doctor of Medical Sciences (1965), Professor (1960). The topic of his Doctoral thesis was “Surgical treatment of cerebral stoke”. From 1959 to 1988 he was the head of the department of Vascular Pathology and Craniocerebral Injury, Kyiv Neurosurgery Institute. Professor Pedachenko prepared an impressive number of specialists for Ukraine and for the whole former USSR. The main directions of scientific researches of Professor G.A. Pedachenko were: training of specialists in neurosurgery, cerebrovascular pathology, craniocerebral injuries, liquor (cerebrospinal fluid) dynamic during neurosurgical pathology and vascular pathology of extracranial cerebrum section. 3 Doctoral and 32 Candidate theses under his supervision were defended. He is the author of 500 scientific works, including 9 monographs, 6 manuals, 30 inventions and 82 innovations.

Since July, 1993, the department is headed by Professor, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Mykola E. Polishchuk. He is the leading specialist in problems of developing different surgery treatment during acute disturbance of cerebral circulation, craniocerebral injury of people of different age, somatic pathology during alcoholic intoxication, combined craniocerebral and spinal column trauma, organization of urgent neurosurgery aid and elaboration of standards and algorithms in neurosurgery, training of postgraduates-neurosurgeons; also he takes part in the development of legislative acts in public health protection, he is the leading neurologist of Kyiv Administration of Health Protection in 1985-1995, and a scientific supervisor of Spinal Pathology Clinic of the Institute of Neurosurgery. He is the author of more than 350 scientific works, among them 18 monographs, 22 inventions, 63 innovations. Under his scientific supervision there were defended 3 Doctoral and 38 Candidate theses. In 1945, the department had 13 neurosurgical beds. Nowadays the base of the department is the Ukrainian Scientific-Research Institute of Neurosurgery with 380 beds (15 clinical wards).

Annually, the students of 8-10 combined courses study at the department (traumatologists, surgeons, court med-experts, neuropathologists, psychiatrists). Since 1992 the department has been training the doctors-interns, and there already have been trained 312 neurosurgeons.

During the period of existence of the department, 14 Doctors of Medical Science, 116 Candidates of Medical Science have been prepared here, 82 have been studying at clinical residency, and 43 - at postgraduate course.

In recent years, there is a tendency to make higher demands towards certification of doctors. For grounding in certification, pre-certification courses are developed at the department. Increasing role of computerisation of educational process and conducting tests in certain qualifying category take place at the department.

The majority of professors, assistant professors of medical establishments of Ukraine, almost all the heads of neurosurgical departments and nearly 80% of attending physicians of these departments have been trained in neurosurgery at the Department of Neurosurgery.
