In 1967 the first Ukrainian Department of Anaesthesiology was organised, located in the Kyiv State Institute for Advanced Training of Doctors (the head was Prof. A.I.Trischynskyi). The major support in development of anaesthesiology as a new field of medicine in Ukraine was given by the minister of public health service of that time, Professor V.D. Bratus’. During the last half a century, the Department of anaesthesiology and intensive therapy of the P.L. Shupyk Kyiv Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education, as well as anaesthesiology in Ukraine, went a complicated way of its formation and development. Doctor-anaesthesiologist became an important figure in medical process both in major clinics and in regional hospitals.
Evolution of a speciality demanded constant advancing of the Department’s work, carrying out a wide range of different courses in anaesthesiology and intensive therapy. During its existence, the Department of Anaesthesiology prepared more then 7 thousands of doctors-anaesthesiologists.
In 1988, the course of children's anaesthesiology was separated from the Department of anaesthesiology, and there was formed the Department of children's anaesthesiology and intensive care, headed by Professor G.I. Belebeziev.
