History Data

The Maxillofacial Surgery (MFS) Department of the P.L.Shupyk Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education (KMAPGE) was established in 1931 as the Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry Department at the Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians (the Ministry of Public Health of the USSR). It was located on a clinical base of the Scientific Research Institute of Orthopedy, and Traumatology and consisted of 3 persons: the head - Professor S.N. Vajsblat, and 2 assistants.

The Republican Maxillofacial Hospital for treatment of invalids of the Great Patriotic war and stomatologic wards of the Kyiv district clinics became an educational base for the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry in 1950 when it was headed by Professor M.M. Velykanova, who held this post until 1957.

In 1957, Professor E.A. Aleksandrova headed the Department. At that time, 5 employees, 1 head and 4 assistants worked at the Department. Until 1959, the staff of Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry Department increased up to 14 persons, and in 1961 - up to 20. It allowed teaching different aspects at one Department: Maxillofacial Surgery, Surgical, Therapeutic and Orthopedic Dentistry, Orthodontics and Children's Stomatology.

The Therapeutic and Orthopedic Dentistry faculties were separated from the Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry Department in 1964. In 1964, the Department also received the name "Maxillofacial Surgery Department".

Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor O.M. Solntsev headed the Department from 1974 until 1989.

The Maxillofacial ward of Clinical Hospital No.24 (Reiterska str.) was the base of the Department during 10 years (1973-1983). And since 1983, and to the present time - Maxillofacial department of City Clinical Hospital No.12 (Podvysotskogo str.) and the City Dentistry Polyclinic became the base of the Department. In that period the Department received the name - "Surgical Dentistry" which was kept until 1989.

In 1989, in accordance with MPH of the USSR, the Department restored the old name - "Maxillofacial Surgery". Since 1989 to the present time O.O. Tymofejev, Merited Worker of Science and Engineering of Ukraine, Academician of UANNP, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Member of the European and International Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons, President of the Ukrainian Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons and Surgeons-stomatologists, Head of the Centre of Maxillofacial and Plastic Surgery, DDG (the Assistant to General Director of the International Biographic Centre, Cambridge, England), DG (the American Biographic Institute, Northern Carolina, USA) has been the Head of the Department of Maxillofacial surgery. He was elected the Honorary Member of Councils of the American Bibliographic Institute (ABI) and the International Biographic Center. He was awarded with a diploma “For achievements in 20-th century” (the International Biographic Centre, Cambridge, Great Britain).

Teaching and Methodological Work:

The following courses are conducted in the department:

Specializations: in Surgical Dentistry, Dentistry. Pre-certification: in Surgical Dentistry, Dentistry.

Topical Advanced Training: "Inflammatory processes in maxillofacial area", "Diagnostics of tumours and tumour-like formations of maxillofacial area", "Problems in surgical dentistry",

Internship: in surgical Stomatology, Stomatology.

Training of clinical residents and postgraduate students:

Every year, nearly 15-30 clinical residents and postgraduate students, masters, and nearly 40-100 interns, 235 - 250 doctors-probationers are trained at the department. The Department has an audience on 50 places and five educational rooms.

Scientific Research Activities:

Professor O.O. Tymofeyev defended his Candidate’s thesis “Early diagnostics and treatment of acute odontogenous inflammatory jaw diseases" in 1982, and in 1988, his Doctoral thesis "Diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of acute inflammatory diseases of the soft tissue". In that period at the Department studied: D.V.Topchiy, O.P.Vesova, A.M.Lyhytskyi, O.V.Gorobets, V.V.Kaminskiy, A.A.Zhezzini, captains of medical service V.V.Kovalenko and V.P.Tsysliuk (from Ukrainian Military Medical College). V.V.Kaminsky, V.L.Lesnuhin, S.V.Pryhodchenko (Vitkovs’ka) and S.V.Kabanchuk took the master’s course at the Department. 19 Doctors, among them 15 – the foreigners from Lebanon, Syria, India, Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, Congo and other countries have taken a clinical residency for the last 10 years at the Department. Professor O.O.Tymofejev has published monographs and manuals: "Odontogenous inflammatory diseases" (together with O.M.Solntsev, 1989), "Purulent surgery of maxillofacial area and neck" (1995), "Manual on maxillofacial surgery and surgical dentistry” volume 1 (1997, 1999), volume 2 (1998), volume 3 (2000) and so on.

The teaching staff of the Department is engaged in scientific research in various aspects of maxillofacial surgery: L.F.Korchak, Candidate of Medical Sciences (treatment of inflammatory jaw diseases and their complications); I.B. Kindras’ Candidate of Medical Sciences (diseases of salivary glands, inflammatory processes of maxillofacial area); O.P.Vesova, Candidate of Medical Sciences (treatment of jaw damages and their complications, neurogenic diseases of maxillofacial area); O.V.Horobets (electrochemical changes in oral cavity in surgical treatment of jaw damages, treatment of tumours and tumour-like formations of jaw and soft tissue), V.V.Kaminsky, Candidate of Medical Sciences (fractures of low jaw, implantology and surgical parodontology). All the teaching staff of the Department is certificated as the doctors of higher category.

Candidate’s theses were defended by A.M. Lyhyts’kyi (now the assistant at the Department of Dentistry at Vinnytsia Medical Institute), D.V. Topchiy (today – the Head of Kyiv Stomatological Clinic), O.P. Vesova, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P.L. Shupyk, O.V. Horobets and V.V. Kaminskyj - assistants at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P.L.Shupyk, V.V. Kovalenko (now – Senior Lecturer at Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry of Military Medical College), V.P. Tsysliuk (Assistant at the same Department), Zhezzini A.A. – the teacher at the university of Beirut, Lebanon; Doctoral theses were defended by I.G. Lisova, Senior Lecturer at Kharkiv Academy for Postgraduate Education, the Dean of the Surgical Department, A.I. Mirza, the Head of Orthopedic Dentistry Department of Kyiv Medical Institute of Ukrainian Association of Folk Medicine (UAFM) under the supervision of Professor A.A.Tymofejev during this period.

At present, the employees of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, P.L.Shupyk КМAPGE, develop the following directions: inflammatory jaw diseases and soft tissue; non-tumoral diseases and tumours of salivary glands, jaws and soft tissue; traumatic damages of soft tissue in maxillofacial area and their complications; dental implantation; deformations of jaws and soft tissues; plastic and aesthetic surgery etc. The scientific elaborations of the teaching staff and competitors of the Department are published in materials of international conferences, which were held in USA, England, Germany, France, Holland, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Italy, Spain and many others.

The members of the Department have received over 50 copyright certificates and patents, published 14 monographs and 9 manuals, more than 20 methodical recommendations and circulars, more than 800 scientific works.

Clinical work:

The Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, P.L.Shupyk КМАPGE, is a basic one in the system of medical education in Ukraine (Decree of MPH of Ukraine No. 317 from 09.11.1998). The Centre of Maxillofacial and Plastic Surgery (1998) was created on the basis of the Department. The main part of planned operative interventions (more than 90 %) is carried out by the employees of the Department. Among the list of the most difficult surgeries are of the following type: tumors of parotid gland (with separation of a trunk and branches of facial nerve), tumours of maxillofacial area and neck, and associated localizations; osteoplastic operations, elimination of posttraumatic and postoperative deformations and defects of jaws and soft tissues; surgical treatment of neurological diseases, aesthetic (cosmetic) operations etc.

More than 2 thousands of patients are treated annually in the hospital at Department of Maxillofacial Surgery (60 beds).

The employees of the Department are on duty at Maxillofacial Centre (according to the programme), all over Kyiv (in the second part of the month) and at medical aviation service (all over Ukraine). They provide an advisory assistance in medical establishments (treatment-and-sanitary association, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Pulmonological Centre, district clinics etc.).

The results of elaborations, performed by the members of Maxillofacial Surgery Department of КМАPE named after P.L.Shupyk, have been implemented into practice of maxillofacial hospitals and in educational process of profile faculties of higher medical educational institutions of Kyiv, Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg, Moscow, Tashkent, Volgograd, Krasnoyarsk, Semipalatinsk, Lviv, Poltava, Kirovograd, Sevastopol, Donetsk, Simferopol, Odessa, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr etc.

The scientific investigations of the members of the Department have been marked by attention from abroad (England, USA, France, Lebanon, Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Spain, Holland etc.).
