Department of Maxillofacial surgery
Brief historyMaxillo-Facial Surgery (MFS) Department of the National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P.L. Shupyk (NMAPE) was established in 1931 as the Maxillo-Facial Surgery and Dentistry Department of Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians (the Ministry of Public Health of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). It was located on a clinical basis of the Scientific and Research Institute of Orthopedy and Traumatology. Its staff included 3 persons: the Head, Professor S. Vaysblat, and 2 assistants. The Republican Maxillo-Facial Hospital for Treatment of Great Patriotic War Invalids and stomatology wards of Kyiv district clinics became an educational basis for the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery and Dentistry in 1950 when it was headed by Professor M. Velikanova, who took up this post until 1957. In 1957 the Department was headed by the Professor E. Aleksandrova. At that time the Department consisted of 5 persons (1 head and 4 assistants). Until 1959 the staff of the Maxillo-Facial Surgery and Dentistry Department increased up to 14 persons, and in 1961 - up to 20. It allowed to conduct teaching on different directions at one Department: Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Surgical, Therapeutic and Orthopedic Dentistry; Orthodontics and Children's Stomatology. In 1964 The Therapeutic and Orthopedic Stomatology departments were separated from the Maxillo-Facial Surgery and Stomatology Department. In 1964 the Department was named as the Maxillo-Facial Surgery Department. Since 1974 to 1989 the Department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor O. Solntsev. The Maxillo-Facial ward of Clinical Hospital number 24 (Reiterska street) was the basis of the Department over 10 years (1973-1983). And since 1983 until now the Maxillo-Facial Department of City Clinical Hospital number 12 (Podvysotskogo street) and the City Stomatology Polyclinic have been the basis of the Department. During that period the Department was named as the Surgical Dentistry Department. And this name was remained until 1989. In 1989 under the agreement with the Ministry of Public Health of the USSR the Department restored its old name of Maxillo-Facial Surgery Department. Since 1989 until now the Department has been headed by O. Tymofeyev, Honoured Scientist and Technician of Ukraine, Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences; Academician of RAMTS, Doctor of Medical Sciences; Professor; Member of the European and International Association of Maxillo-Facial Surgeons; President of the Ukrainian Association of Maxillo-Facial Surgeons and Surgeons-Stomatologists; Head of the Centre of Maxillo-Facial and Plastic Surgery; DDG (the Assistant to General Director of the International Biographic Centre, Cambridge, England), DG (the American Biographic Institute, Northern Carolina, USA). He was elected an Honorary Member of Councils of the American Bibliographic Institute (ABI) and the International Biographic Center. He also was awarded with a diploma “For the Achievements in XX Century” (the International Biographic Centre, Cambridge, Great Britain). Teaching and methodological activity
The following courses are conducted at the Department:
Scientific activityIn 1982 Professor O. Tymofeyev defended his Ph.D thesis on Early Diagnostics and Treatment of Acute Odontogenous Inflammatory Jaw Diseases and in 1988 he defended his Doctoral thesis on Diagnostics, Treatment and Prophylaxis of Acute Inflammatory Diseases of the Soft Tissue. At that period the following persons have been taking the master course at the Department: D. Topchiy, O. Vesova, A. Lyhytskyy, O. Gorobets, V. Kaminskiy, V. Lesnukhin, M. Tamimi, A. Zhezzini, captains of medical service V. Kovalenko and V. Tsyslyuk (from Ukrainian Military Medical College). V. Kaminsky, V. Lesnukhin, S. Pryhodchenko (Vitkovska) and S. Kabanchuk had complited magistracy at the Department. 29 Doctors (25 of which were foreigners from Armenia, Georgia, Lebanon, Syria, India, Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, Congo and other countries) have taken clinical residency at the Department over the last 10 years. Professor O. Tymofeyev published monographs and manuals on Odontogenous Inflammatory Diseases (together with O. Solntsev, 1989), Purulent Surgery of Maxillo-Facial Area and Neck (1995), Manual on Maxillo-Facial Surgery and Surgical Dentistry (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004), Diseases of Salivary Glands (2007), Essential Principles of Maxillo-Facial Surgery (2007) etc. The Department teaching staff is engaged in scientific research in various aspects of maxillo-facial surgery: I. Kindras, Candidate of Medical Sciences (diseases of salivary glands, inflammatory processes of maxillo-facial area); O. Vesova, Candidate of Medical Sciences (treatment of jaw damages and their complications, neurogenic diseases of maxillo-facial area); V. Kaminskyy, Candidate of Medical Sciences (fractures of low jaw, treatment of tumors and tumor-like formations of jaw and soft tissue, dental implantology and surgical parodontology). All the members of the Department teaching staff were certificated as the doctors of higher category.
Under the supervision of Professor O. Tymofeyev during the above-mentioned period Ph.D theses were defended by A. Lyhytskyy (now the Assistant Professor of the Department of Dentistry at Vinnitsa National Medical University), D. Topchiy (currently an Assistant of the Department of Surgical Dentistry of the National Medical University named after O. Bogomolets); O. Vesova and V. Kaminskyy, Associate Professors and Senior Lecturers of the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery of the National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P. Shupyk, V. Kovalenko (currently a Senior Lecturer of the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery and Dentistry of the Military Medical College); V. Tsyslyuk (Assistant of the same Department), Mazen Shtay Tamimi (Head of the Stomatological Centre of Dental Implantology, Jordan); A. Zhezzini (Lecturer of the Beirut University, Lebanon). Doctoral theses were defended by I. Lisova (Head of the Department, Professor of Kharkiv Academy for Postgraduate Education); A. Mirza (Head of the Orthopedic Dentistry Department of the Kyiv Institute of Ecology and Medicine); A. Barilo (an Associate Professor of the Department of Surgical Dentistry and Maxillo-Facial Surgery at Vinnitsa National Medical University). Currently the employees of the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery of the NМAPE named after P. Shupyk develop the following directions: inflammatory jaw diseases and soft tissue; non-tumor diseases and tumors of salivary glands, jaws and soft tissue; traumatic damages of soft tissue in maxillo-facial area and their complications; dental implantation; deformations of jaws and soft tissues; plastic and aesthetic surgery etc. The scientific researches of the teaching staff and competitors of the Department were published in materials of international conferences held in USA, England, Germany, France, Holland, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Italy, Spain and many others countries. The Department staff have received over 50 author’s certificates and patents, published 14 monographs and 9 manuals, more than 20 methodical recommendations and circulars, more than 800 scientific works. Clinical activityThe Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery of the NМАPE named after P. Shupyk is one of the kea in the system of medical education in Ukraine (Decree of MPH of Ukraine number 317 dated on November 9, 1998). The Centre of Maxillo-Facial and Plastic Surgery (1998) was created on the basis of the Department. The main part of planned operative interventions (more than 90%) is carried out by the Department staff. Among the list of the most difficult surgeries are the following: tumors of parotid gland (with separation of a trunk and branches of facial nerve), tumors of maxillo-facial area and neck, and associated localizations; osteoplastic operations, elimination of posttraumatic and postoperative deformations and defects of jaws and soft tissues; surgical treatment of neurological diseases, aesthetic (cosmetic) operations etc. More than 2 thousands of patients are treated annually in the hospital of the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery (60 beds). Two times a week (on Monday and Thursday from 11 till 12 o’clock) consultations are hold for revealing patients who has maxillo-facial pathology. On average about 1,5 thousand people are being consulted per year. The employees of the Department are on duty at the Maxillo-Facial Centre (according to the schedule), around Kyiv city (in the second half of the month) and at medical aviation service (all over Ukraine). They provide an advisory assistance in medical establishments (treatment-and-sanitary association, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Pulmonological Centre, district clinics etc.). The results of researches, performed by the members of the Maxillo-Facial Surgery Department of the NМАPE named after P. Shupyk, have been implemented into practice of maxillo-facial hospitals and in educational process of relevant departments of higher medical educational institutions of Kyiv, Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg, Moscow, Tashkent, Volgograd, Krasnoyarsk, Semipalatinsk, Lviv, Poltava, Kirovograd, Sevastopol, Donetsk, Simferopol, Odessa, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr etc. The scientific investigations of the Department staff have drawn attention abroad (England, USA, France, Lebanon, Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Spain, Holland etc.).
