The main directions of the staff’ teaching activities are: teaching- methodological work on advanced training of physicians, educational, clinical work as well as patronizing, educative and social work.
In the first years of its activities the department had facilities for providing advanced training for 80-100 doctors per year. At present, the department carries out the following courses every year: pre-certification training, topical advanced training, internship, specialized training in “Therapeutic Stomatology”. Associated training courses ─ those of pre-certification “Stomatology”, specialized training “Stomatology”, “Orthopedic stomatology”, “General practice ─ family medicine”. Annually, over 400 doctors-stomatologists from different regions of Ukraine take advanced training. During all the period of its existence the department has trained approximately 11 thousand doctors.
Initially, the scientific activity of the
department was devoted to two basic stomatological problems:
1). Caries and its complications;
2). Pathogenesis and treatment of periodontitis.
Investigating the problem “Caries and its complications” the teaching staff members paid a special attention to research of microelements and enzymes in dental development, etiology and pathogenesis of caries, effectiveness of using microelements in preventing and treating caries. The results of scientific work on this problem are described in 5 textbooks, 4 medical recommendations, 2 information letters, 15 reports at different Congresses, conferences, societies, 99 articles and implemented in numerous medical institutions of this country.
Besides, the teaching staff members of the department, in cooperation with the Institute of Gerontology, researched the problems of periodontitis, taking into account the age of patients; they studied its pathogenesis and treatment.
After working over the problem of periodontitis for 15 years, the scientists of the department published 3 textbooks, wrote 3 methodological recommendations, published an informational letter and 60 articles.
At the same time, the scientific workers of the department were engaged in studying the problems of efficacy of plant medications in treatment of stomatological diseases (the materials were described in the book “Phytotherapy in Stomatology”), researching and developing new filling materials; developing new objective methods of diagnosing and using acupuncture for anesthesia and treatment of periodontal diseases.
For about 40 years of their work, the teaching staff members of the department published over 500 scientific works, among them: 8 books, 5 manuals, 4 methodological recommendations, 3 information letters, they were given 25 Copyright Certificates of authorship, 103 certificates for innovations.
The Department was conferred on the title “Collective of high Culture” and “Exemplary Collective”.
In 1990, in accordance with the order of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the USSR No. 500 as of 10.07.82 “About filling the vacations of the teaching staff” and according to resolution of the Academic Board of the Academy (Prof. V.N.Gyrin), Prof. A.P. Hroholsky was elected a Head of the Department of Therapeutic Stomatology of Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P.L.Shupyk.
Prof. A.P. Hroholsky graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute with honors in 1962. He was recorded in the “Golden Book of Honour” of the Institute.
He worked as a medical resident, postgraduate, assistant, associate professor of the Department of Therapeutic Stomatology of Kyiv Medical Institute. In 1965 he defended his Candidate’s Thesis “Dental scurf and its influence on periodontal tissue”. In 1982, he defended his Doctoral Thesis “The use of low temperature in treating the diseases of periodontal and mucous membrane of the oral cavity (clinical-experimental research)”.

He provides consultations and treatment for patients with diseases of mucous membrane of the oral cavity; actively uses new methods of treatment – cryotherapy, cryosurgery, hypo- and hyperthermia. Prof A.P. Hroholsky together with the teaching staff of the department continued good traditions of the department of therapeutic stomatology, founded by Prof. N.A. Kodola.
The main pre-certification computer program, 1007 computer tests for certifying doctors-stomatologists for higher, the first and second qualifying categories were elaborated by the teaching staff members of the department under the supervision of Prof. A.P. Hroholsky. Computer tests were approved by the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine.
In 1991-2002, the teaching staff members continued elaborating the scientific subject: improvement of methods of diagnosis and treatment of periodontal tissues diseases.
The second direction of scientific activities was: development and implementation into practical stomatology new forms of medical preparations in treatment of periodontal tissues diseases, and the methods of their application. Experimental clinical investigation and approbation of numerous medical preparations, immobilized on sorbents: aerosyl, polisorb, “Silard-P” were carried out in cooperation with the institute of chemistry of surface of the NAS of Ukraine. The main purposes of sorbent using were: their ability to prolong pharmacologic effect of medical preparations, active absorption of microorganisms, as well as of the products of their vital functions and of the decay of tissues, of toxins. Medical preparations of synthetic and vegetable origin are used for immobilization. Compounding of biological toothpastes on the basis of microelements and antibiotics were elaborated for treating hard cases of caries. Various ways and methods of using medicinal preparations of vegetable and synthetic origin, immobilized on sorbents, were worked out and approbated for the treatment of generalized periodontitis. Different concentrations of well known and used in clinical work medical preparations (sweetflag, calendula, salvia, decamethoxin, chlorphilipt etc, were used for immobilization.
Clinical and laboratory investigations showed their high effectiveness аnd their reasonable price, which is very important nowadays. Methods of treatment, suggested by the department, are widely used at the clinical base and many other medical establishments.
Recently, the scientific developments of the department have been aimed at studying introduction of some physical factors into medical practice (cryotherapy, magnetotherapy etc.), which will give the opportunity to increase the efficacy of treatment of dental diseases.
The teaching staff members received a Copyright Certificate for invention (a method of periodontitis treatment No. 1683748), they published methodological recommendations (1993), informative letters, 2 monographs, 78 articles and abstracts, 16 reports. They prepared and published (typographical version) methodological instructions comprised of 3 chapters on therapeutic stomatology (in Russian and Ukrainian): “Caries and its complications, Non-caries lesions of teeth” (1993), “Periodontal diseases” (1993), “Diseases of mucous membrane of the oral cavity» (1994). The results of scientific investigations are implemented in public health practice and educational process.
Material facilities of the department are constantly broadening and improving. For instance, in the last 3-5 years, the base of the Department of Stomatology (1, T. H. Shevchenka blvd.) was considerably extended, joining 4 rooms of the third floor of the building (100 m2). It enabled establishing a consulting office with 1 workplace, orthopedic office with 3 dental armchairs, a dental prosthodontic laboratory with 3 working tables, a computer classroom with 8 working places, a room for assistant professors and assistants with 10 working places, a room for laboratory assistants for 4 working places.
