History Data
The first Department of Children’s Stomatology in Ukraine was organized on January 6, 1977. O.V. Udovytska, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Leading children's stomatologist of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine was the head of the department from 1997 to 1997. From 1997 to 2001, the collective worked as a section in the structure of the Department of Therapeutic Stomatology (head of the department ─ Prof. O. P. Groholsky), and from 2001 to 2003 – the Department of Stomatology (head of the department ─ Prof. O. V. Pavlenko). Since August 26, 2003 the Department of Children’s Stomatology was renewed, and Doctor of Medical Sciences, Leading children's stomatologist of Central Administration of Health Care and the Ministry of Public Health of Kyiv N.O. Savychuk was appointed the Head of the department.
Qualified, authoritative, and prominent scientists, known in Ukraine and abroad, work in the Department of Children’s Stomatology, in particular: O.V. Savychuk, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor, the head of the department since 2003 (since 1992 till now), Tetiana J. Boychenko, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Assistant Professor (since 1980 till now), Inna O. Golovnia, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor, (1987-1990), Svitlana P. Colomijets, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant (1976-1980), Olena F. Kononovych, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor (1976-1979 ), Liudmyla F. Korchak, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor (1976-1990), Liudmyla B. Leporska, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor (1976-2002), Dmytro V. Leporsky, Assistant (since 2002 till now), Svitlana V. Nedashkivska, Assistant (since 2003 until present time), Tamara M. Spiridonova, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor (1980-2003), Valerij M. Kharchenko, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant (1976-1996), Lidija H. Shcherbyna, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor (1976-1979).
During the time of existence of the department, 2 postgraduate students and 18 clinical residents were trained. All postgraduate students and clinical residents have become highly skilled experts, with the first, or higher qualifying categories, most of them take part in scientific researches, they generalized their experience in scientific publications and defended their theses.
The teaching staff members of the department carry out postgraduate training of doctors-residents and doctors-probationers in specializations “Children's Stomatology”, “Orthodontia”, “Stomatology”. During academic year the teaching staff members of the department carry out training at pre-certification courses in “Children's Stomatology”, “Orthodontia”, courses for interns in “Stomatology”, and at specialisation and topical advanced courses for doctors-orthodontists and children's stomatologists.
The members of the department carry out large scientific-research activity, which is devoted to the most actual problems of practical protection of health: “Stomatological disease and their connection with pathology of internals" (1978-1981), “Peculiarities of clinic, diagnostics and treatment of diseases of oral cavity of children, connected with acceleration” (1982-1985), “Estimation of age features of oral cavity organs and stomatological diseases of children in dynamics from 7 till 11” (1986-1990), “Diagnostics, immunotherapy and immunoprophylaxis of stomatological diseases of children, which develop on the background of immunodeficiency” (1991-1995), “The level of the stomatological health: methods of definition and correction” (1996-2000), “Methodological approaches and criteria of estimation of stomatological health of children in Ukraine” (2003-2007).
In the period of their activity, 5 Candidate and 2 doctoral dissertations were defended. The teaching staff members of the department published 766 scientific-and-research and educational works, including 2 monographies, 9 textbooks, 46 manuals, including those under international projects; 8 patents for inventions registered in the former USSR and Ukraine, 86 innovations, 1 expert diagnostic International project.
During 25 years of the department’s, activity 652 speeches were presented (international ─ 31, all-Ukraine ─ 54, regional ─ 30, municipal ─ 127, district ─ 410. Scientific-pedagogical developments of the teaching staff members of the department were introduced in pedagogical process of profile departments of KMAPE, and of other medical higher educational institutions of Ukraine, departments and courses of humanitarian profile ─ Taras Shevchenko National University, National Pedagogical University named after M. Dragomanov, Open International University of Human Development “Ukraine", Children's health-improving ecological Center for young people of Minsk district of Kyiv, Saint Ghoretti in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Results of research activity of the department’s collective were applied in practical work of stomatological polyclinics, children's stomatological wards, medical establishments of Ukraine – cities of Kyiv, Mykolajiv, Sumy, Herson, Yenakievo, Cherkasy, Chernigiv, Sevastopol; stomatologycal polyclinics, children's stomatologycal wards of medical establishments of CIS countries – cities of Ashgabat, Tashkent, Baku, Novosibirsk, Lipetsk, Tambov.

The approaches to estimation of stomatological health condition of children were developed;
Methods of prophylaxis of caries of children were developed and introduced into practice;
Methods of treatment of mucous membrane and periodontal tissues disease of children were developed.
