History Data

The institute of Stomatology was founded in June, 3, 2003, under the order No. 1241 as of 03.06.2003 “On Establishing of the Institute of Stomatology of P.L. Shupyk KMAPGE”.

The scientific and pedagogical potential of structural departments includes:

6 Doctors of Sciences (including 5 Professors);

19 Candidates of Sciences (including 18 Assistant Professors);

20 Candidate’s and 4 Doctoral these are being performed;

The facilities of the Institute of Stomatology is a number of Health Care institutions of Kyiv and premises of KMAPGE: the City Stomatological Polyclinic (10 A, Pymonenko Str.)  - the Department of Stomatology, Orthopaedic stomatology and Maxillofacial surgery; the City Hospital No. 12 (4A, Pidvysotsky Str.) - the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, the Department of Stomatology; the Department of CSP of Podil and Obolon’ districts (12 B, Kopylovsy, 34 D, Obolons’ka Str.) - the Department of Children’s stomatology; Stomatological Polyclinic of KMAPGE (1, Shevchenka Str.) - the Department of Therapeutic Stomatology; the Theoretical Division (9, Dorohozhytska Str.) – courses of advanced training of dental technicians;

The aim of activities of the Institute is to provide the needs of public health care institutions in training, retraining and advanced training of doctors-stomatologists according to specialties of stomatological profile by the Order No. 359 of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine.

The main tasks of the Institute are:

- To provide educational process in advancing qualification of doctors-stomatologists, their preparation for certification categories within the programs of pre-certification and topical advanced courses, training of doctors-interns, masters, clinical residents, and postgraduate students according to the higher education standards;

- To organize and carry out off-budget training courses and seminars for doctors-interns, masters, clinical residents, postgraduate students, advancing of qualification of specialists according to educational-professional programs of lower level of certification;

- Deliver medical aid to population independently of the place of registration, and also to foreign citizens within active standard acts of Ukraine with the use of received costs as a part of educational process financing;

- To provide expert judgment of new technologies, materials, medicines, methods of diagnostics and treatment of dental diseases with concluding corresponding contracts and the use of obtained funds for providing the educational process;

The Institute of Stomatology includes 5 Departments:

Department of Stomatology

The head of the Department - Oleksiy V. Pavlenko, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Director of the Institute of Stomatology;

The Department of Stomatology was founded on initiative of ex-rector of KMAPE named after P.L. Shupyk Vitaly M. Gyrin January, 9, 2001 for providing the population of Ukraine with highly qualified stomatological help by means of postgraduate training of doctors-stomatologists of general profile. The Department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor P.O. Pavlenko.

Teaching and Methodological Work

The following courses are held at the Department:

Specialization: specialization in Stomatology;

Pre-certification: pre-certification course in Stomatology;

Topical Advanced Training:

Internship: in Stomatology;

Clinical residencies and post-graduate education.

The Department conducts educational process with masters, clinical residents, postgraduate students, practicing doctors-stomatologists on clinical bases, equipped with modern stomatological facilities.

Studies are carried out by the highly qualified teachers under conditions of full methodological backing of educational process and technical equipments (projection techniques, slide techniques, video).

Scientific Research Activities

Primary direction of the Department is mastering the most modern and complicated technologies, worked out both in Ukraine and abroad, with the aim to implement them into everyday practice of dentists. The scientific direction of the Department is also the development of existing methods of diagnostics and prophylaxis of dental diseases, using modern technologies of medicine and information science. The subject of planned scientific research work is: “Clinical and experimental substantiation of using modern medical technology in diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of general dental diseases”.

Department of Orthopedic Stomatology

The head of the Department of Orthopedic Stomatology is Doctor of Medial Sciences, Professor Valery S. Onyshchenko.

The Department of Orthopedic Stomatology of KMAPGE (earlier - of Kyiv Institute of Advanced Training of physicians), was established in 1964. It was headed first by Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor M.A. Kodoal, who combined his duties, and since December, 1965 till May, 1985, the Deaptment was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor A.N Hubska. Since May, 1985, till June, 1992, the Department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor A.I. Dovzhenko. Since June, 1992, the Department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor V.S. Onyshchenko.

The primary direction of the Department is the usage of modern technologies in orthopaedic stomatology and orthodontics, worked out both in Ukraine and abroad.

The Department provides postgraduate education for the doctors, specialized in orthopaedic stomatology through pre-certification in internship (2 years), retraining courses of specialization (4 months), and probation in orthopaedic stomatology (1 month). The theme of the scientific research work of the Department is “Rehabilitation of patients with dentition defects”. The scientists of the Department study preparation of the oral cavity for prosthesis, depending on the type of pathology, metallic constructions and prognostication of its effect on the organism of a patient, protection of dental hard tissues during preparation for prosthesis and complex treatment of patients with pathology of periodontium tissues, orthopedic treatment of patients with decompensated forms of lowering of bite height.

Department of Children’s Stomatology

The head of the Department - Natalia O. Syvachuk, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor, deputy director of the Institute of Stomatology of KMAPE in educational and scientific activities.

The first Department of Children’s Stomatology in Ukraine was organized on January 6, 1977 to provide the population of Ukraine with highly qualified stomatological help by means of postgraduate training of children’s doctors-stomatologists and doctors-orthodontists.

The head of the Department from 1997 to 1997 was O.V. Udovytska, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Leading children's stomatologist of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine. Since 1997 to 2001 the collective worked as a section in the structure of the Department of Therapeutic Stomatology (head of the department - Prof. O. P. Groholsky), and from 2001 to 2003 – the Department of Stomatology (head of the department - Prof. O. V. Pavlenko).

The collective of the Department carries out training of doctors-interns, clinical residents, postgraduate students, specialized in children’s stomatology and orthodontics. The main directions of the Department’s work are:

- Training of children’s doctors-stomatologists and doctors-orthodontists to master modern native and foreign technologies of prophylaxis, diagnostics and treatment of stomatological diseases of children, and also identification of the level of their dental health. The teaching staff members pay much attention to teaching and methodological work, implementation of new modern technologies of teaching, preparation and publishing methodological and scientific literature. The principle direction of scientific research work of the Department’s employees is the study of criteria and methods for identifying of dental health level of children of Ukraine, and this is the basic part of the National program “Children of Ukraine”.

Department of Maxillofacial Surgery

The head of the Department is Oleksiy O. Tymofejev, the Merited Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor.

The Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of KMAPE was established in 1931 as the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry at Kyiv Institute of Advanced Training of Physicians (the Ministry of Public Health of the USSR). In 1964 the Departments of Therapeutic and Orthopedic Stomatology separated from the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology. In 1964 this Department acquired the name “Department of Maxillofacial Surgery”. The heads of the Department were: Professor S.N. Vaisblat (1931-1950), Professor M.M. Velikanova (1950-1957), Professor E.A. Aleksandrova ((1957-1974), Professor O.M. Solntsev (1974-1989). Since 1989 till now, the Department has been headed by O.O. Tymofejev, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor. He is the Merited Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Academician of UANNP, DDG (England), DG (USA), Member of European and International Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons, President of Ukrainian Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons and Surgeons-stomatologists.

The employees of the Department develop such directions as treatment of inflammatory diseases of maxillas and soft tissues, diagnostics and treatment non-tumorous diseases and tumours of salivary glands, maxillas and soft tissues, and also traumatic injuries of tissues of maxillofacial area and their complications, detailed implantation, deformations of maxillas and soft tissues, plastic and aesthetic surgery.

The results of researches performed by the employees of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of KMAPE named after P.L. Shupyk have been implemented into practice of maxillofacial hospitals and into educational process of profile departments of higher medical educational establishments of Ukraine.

Pre-certificate courses in surgical stomatology (1 month), and stomatology (1 month), specialization in surgical stomatology (4 months) and stomatology (3 months), and topical advanced training courses and internship in surgical stomatology are held at the Department monthly.

Centre of maxillofacial and plastic surgery was established on the basis of the Department (1998).

Department of Therapeutic Stomatology

The head of the Department of Therapeutic Stomatology is Halyna F. Biloklytska, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor.

The Department of Therapeutic Stomatology of the Institute of Stomatology of KMAPE named after P.L Shupyk is one of the oldest in the system of postgraduate education (founded in 1964). Its first head was Professor M.A. Kodola. Since 1990 till 2000 it was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor A.B. Horoholsky. In different years, the following specialists were working there: Professors I.O. Novyk, O.V. Udovytska, O.M. Solntsev. Assistant Professors: K.P. Kopjova, L.H. Shcherbina, S.A. Pavlyk, S.I. Kozlovsky, A.R. Skarbenchuk, H.K. Sydorchuk.

The base of the Department’s activities is teaching and methodological work on improving knowledge and skills of the doctors under training, scientific, clinical and consultative work. Scientific work of the Department during the period of 1964-2002 was devoted to the two major problems of stomatology: caries and its complications; pathogenesis and treatment of diseases of periodontal tissues.

The main scientific direction of the Department is improving, the methods of diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of periodontal tissues diseases, remained the same and continues its development with coming into office of the new head of the Department, Professor H.F. Biloklytska. The new scientific theme the Department is working on will give the opportunity to broaden the idea of peculiarities of clinic, diagnostics and treatment of periodontium diseases.

The main tasks of the Department is realization of plans of integration of topical and pre-certification courses, improvement of methods of teaching according to standard curricula and pre-certification plans, carrying out scientific researches, improving of clinical work on the clinical base of the Department.

Courses of Advanced Training of Dental Mechanics

The Courses of Advanced Training of Dental Mechanics were established on 12.09.2000 with the aim to improve the level of skills of dental mechanics. Courses are held on the basis of Dental-technical laboratory of the Institute of Stomatology of KMAPE, which is equipped with modern facilities. The study for dental mechanics is carried out by highly qualified specialists under conditions of full methodological ensuring of educational process and technical equipment.

Courses conduct postgraduate training of dental mechanics during 1 month (course of advanced training of dental mechanics), as well as topical advanced training of dental mechanics lasting 2 weeks (technology of producing ceramic-metal dentures).
