History Data: The Department of Forensic Medicine was created in 1938. It was organized by Professor А.М. Hamburg, who was also the first Head of the Department. At that time, the Department was based in the Kyiv Medico-Legal Morgue and the Medico-Legal Ambulance Station. The work of the Department was restored in 1944; in 1972, the Department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor V.P. Homenok; in July 1987, the Department had headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Y.P.Shupyk, the author of more than 80 research works, the Leading Medico-legal Expert of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine. Since February 2006 the Department had been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Volodymdr D. Mishalov, the author of more than 100 publications of works, forensic medicine. 26 patents. Since 1962, for the first time in the Department’s practice the preparation of doctors on issues of medico-legal traumatology began; the Department also initiated training courses for heads of bureaus of medico-legal examination. The Department is now based at: the Main Bureau of Medico-legal Examination of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine and the Bureau of Medico-legal Examination of the Central Administrative Board of public health service and medical maintenance of the Kyiv City State Administration. Teaching and Methodological Work: The following course of training are carried out at the Department: Pre-certification: training courses in “Forensic Medical Expertise” Topical Advanced Training Internship: “Forensic Medical Expertise” Scientific Research Activities: The basic research direction of the Department lately has been the questions of traumatology in forensic medicine, in particular, determination of character and the mechanism of formation of damages, identification of injuring subjects, medico-legal aspects of Craniocerebral trauma. Expert work: All teachers of the Department take part in complex medico-legal examinations, reviewing of reports of experts of the Main Bureau of Medico-legal Examination of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine, rendering of the advisory assistance both to experts of the bases and the Bureau of Medico-legal Examination of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine and to judicial-investigatory agencies.
