History Data:

The Department of Radiology (then named rontgenology) was created in 1936; it was reorganized into the Department of Rontgenology and Medical Radiology in 1954 in connection with the development of medical radiology. For associated teaching of rontgenology and medical radiology at one department, it became necessary to install special radiological apparatus with particular conditions of its use. It made the performance of pedagogical process more complicated and in 1957, the Department was subdivided into 2 independent departments: the Department of Rontgenology and that of Medical Radiology (with a course of radiation hygiene included in 1984).,The Academic Board of P.L. Shupyk KMAPGE decided to reunite 2 departments and to create the Department of Radiology (sections of Radio-Diagnostics and Radiology) In 1999.

During the years of existence of the Department it was headed by: Assistant Professor M.I. Shor (1936-1941), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Professor O.O. Horodetsky (1944-1957), Professor A .Ye. Rubashova (1957-1967), Professor M.F. Lipkan (1968-1986), Professor H.Yu. Koval’ (1987-1994), Professor T.P. Syvachenko (1986-1993), Assistant Professor O.A. Honchar (1994-1999) – Head of the Department of Radiation Diagnostics, Prof. D.S. Clinical work:

The department of radiology provides consultative, diagnostic and clinical work at base (9) and extra-base (3) medical establishments. Annually, over 8,300 patients, including children, receive consultations and treatment (radiation therapy, radiotherapy by open isotopes); the patients undergo radiologic investigations, including computer magneto-resonance tomography, ultra-sound investigations with using color Doppler imaging, radionuclide diagnostics, and estimation of radionuclide presence in the human body.

The patients with malignant tumors of practically all localizations undergo radiation therapy at the City Oncological Hospital (one of the main bases of the department). Radio-therapy is carried out on modern gamma-therapeutic devices for distance and contact treatment (AGAT-R, ROCUS, AGAT-VU, Selectron). Besides, there is a linear accelerator “Microtron”, which enables treating patients by means of highly energetic electrons and photons. The planning of radiation therapy is realized by a roentgenologic simulator.

If necessary, radiosensitizing of tumors – introtumoral introduction of radiomodificators, local hyperthermia of tumors, non-traditional fractionation of 24 hour dosage etc. are used in radiation therapy of patients.

The patients with cancer of thyroid, prostate and mammary glands with metastasis to osseous system are treated at the Clinic of open isotopes.
