Department of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics

History Data

The Department of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics, being founded in 1960, today is the main Ukrainian department in specialty “Clinical Biochemistry”. In different years, the Department had been headed by I.I. Fedorov (1960 – 1972) – Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, M.A. Bazarnova (1973 – 1991) – Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, G.N. Lipkan (1991 – till now) – Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences.

The bases of the Department: till 1995 – the Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 14, since 1995 – the laboratory building of the P.L. Shupyk Kyiv Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education.

More than fifty doctors (among them 12 foreign registrars from Syria, Iran, and Lebanon) have graduated from clinical residency throughout the history of the Department of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics.

Teaching and Methodological Work:

The following courses are developed at the Department:

Specialization: in clinical laboratory diagnostics, clinical biochemistry;

Pre-certification: clinical laboratory diagnostics, clinical biochemistry;

Topical Advanced: “Cytological Diagnostics of Growth”, “Hematological Methods of Diagnostics”, “Clinical Biochemistry”, “Actual Questions of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics: Common to All Clinic, Haematological, Cytological and Biochemistrical Methods of Diagnostics” – for teachers and professors of medical universities and medical academies of post-graduate education.

Scientific work:

In 2004 have been planed the scientific-research work “Investigation of the apoptosis and genetic determinant role in progress of cardiovascular pathology in experiment and clinic”. Term of execution: 2004-2008.

In December 2002, the scientific-research work “Study of the influence of carotene oils on the function of liver under conditions of atherosclerosis and experimental stress” (1996 – 2002) was finished. The research supervision was carried out by Professor Lipkan G.N. On the basis of the scientific-research work, 30 scientific works were published, 7 Candidate theses by the teaching staff members and competitors were defended, 2 patents were obtained.

The teaching staff members are the authors of the manual edited by Professor M.A. Basarnova “Manual in clinical laboratory diagnostics”, consisting of 3 volumes, published in 1981 and republished in 1991. In 1988, “Manual for practical training in clinical laboratory diagnostics” was published under the editorship of Professor M.A. Basarnova, and in 1994 – “Practical training in clinical biochemistry” under the editorship of Professor M.A. Basarnova and Assistant Professor Z.P. Gette.

In 2005 was published such manuals: “Chosen lectures on clinical laboratory diagnostics(clinical cytology)”, “Chosen lectures on clinical laboratory diagnostics(clinical hematology)”, “Chosen lectures on clinical laboratory diagnostics(clinical biochemistry)”.

Nowdays under the guidance of Professor G.N. Lipkan, the teaching staff members are working on a new manual, which includes all main parts of clinical laboratory diagnostics.

Clinical work:

Teaching staff members carry out a great amount of work concerning diagnostics in all fields of clinical laboratory diagnostics for the city of Kyiv, Kyiv region and other regions of Ukraine.

According to the agreements entered into between the Department and the Kyiv Emergency Hospital, with the Kyiv Regional Hospital, the main amount of works accounts for these medical-preventive institutions, and also teaching staff members are consulting physician of the cytological laboratory of the City Hospital No.1 (Darnytsia district of Kiev) and in the City Laboratory Center (the Central City Clinical Hospital).

The teaching staff members are the members of the attestation committee of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine, the municipal health service (the city of Kyiv) and the regional health service (Kyiv region) and in committees of different authorities.
