History:

The department of roentgenology (radiodiagnostics) was found in 1936. The first head of department was associate professor M.I.Shor. At that time the department had only the cycles of specialization on roentgenology. From 1944 the department under guidance of professor O.O. Gorodetsky had started the cycles of thematic improvement on roentgenology, and from 1954 - on medical radiology.

In 1957 the department was parted into two independent departments: roentgenology and medical radiology. In different periods of time the department was headed: professor A.E. Rubashova (1957 - 1967), professor G.Yu Koval (1967 - 1994), associate professor O.A.Gonchar (1994 - 1999), professor D.S.Mechev (1999 - 2007)

With appearance of new radiation methods of investigation the activity of department was enlarged. The teaching and preparation of specialists on ultrasound diagnostics (1988) and on computer tomography (1991г.) was started. In this connection in 1989 the name of the department was changed from “roentgenology “ into “radiation diagnostics”. At that time the automated computer control of students’ knowledge as well as the internship curriculum and program on specialty "Radiology-diagnostics".

In 1999 by order of P.L.Shupik KMAPE rector, professor V.M. Girin, the department of radiation diagnostics and the department of medical radiology were united into common department of radiology under the guidance of professor D.S.Mechov

 In 2008 the department was divided again into two independent departments: radiation diagnostics and radiology. The department of radiation diagnostics was headed by professor I.M.Dykan, who is the main roentgenologist of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine.

For the short time the department of radiation diagnostics realized serious work: the amount of clinical bases equipped with modern CT, MRT, US and X-ray apparatuses is enlarged; the educational process is intensified at high scientific and technological level, the contribution of teachers of department in the development of radiological science is raised.

The employees of department always actively participate in social and public work.

Professor A.A.Gorodetsky was the main roentgenologist of Ministry of Health of Ukraine, and during 12 years - the chairman of Kiev city scientific society of roentgenologists and radiologists, editor-in-chief of journal “Radio-biology”, was the member of editorial advices of 4 journals.

In 1965 professor A.E.Rubashova organized Kiev regional scientific and practical society of roentgenologists and radiologists and headed it up to 1968. From 1968 to 1989 Kiev regional scientific and practical society of roentgenologists and radiologists was headed by professor G.Yu.Koval. She was the member of Board of Republican and city scientific and practical societies of roentgenologists and radiologists. Professor M.M. Zagorodskaya was the member of Board of Allied scientific and practical society of roentgenologists and radiologists. Professor G.Yu.Koval took part in the editorial board on creation of the unified curriculums on roentgenology and radiology (Moscow).

In 1992 professor J.S.Babiy created and during 10 years was the president of Association of radiologists of Ukraine (ARU). During this period he was the editor of Collection of the scientific works of ARU and of the journal “Radiation diagnostics, radiation therapy”.

Teaching:

The department presents the following cycles:

specializations: on specialty roentgenology, on specialty ultrasound diagnostics;

pre-attestation: on specialty roentgenology, ultrasound diagnostics;

thematic improvement: “Computer tomography”, “Magnetic resonance tomography”, «Radiation diagnostics of the breast diseases », «Selected questions of radial diagnostics in pediatrics», «Internship for doctors who confirm the rank of doctor-specialist on specialty „Roentgenology”», «Internship for doctors who confirm the rank of doctor-specialist on specialty „Ultrasonic diagnostics”»

Interns: on specialty radiology-diagnostics.

Research work:

For the whole period of the department existence the faculty advisors on the basis of scientific research development created a number of fundamental works that were widely accepted in scientific and practical roentgenology. 7 doctoral and 29 candidate’s dissertations were fulfilled, 10 monographs, guidance “Radial diagnostics”(II vol.), collection of test questions on roentgenology «Radiation diagnostics», 8 collections of scientific papers, 18 methodical recommendations, 7 training aids, more than 1700 articles were published. Over 52 copyright certificates on an invention were got and applied in public health. 15 graduate students, 3 masters, 38 resident and 45 foreign clinical interns were prepared. The teachers of the department execute great volume of practical diagnostic work (up to 6 500 radiation examinations per year).

In 2004 on the basis of the department under the aegis of NMAPE the journal “Radiological bulletin” was founded. A department is the main basic department in Ukraine on roentgenology and ultrasound diagnostics.

Medical work:

The teachers of the department fulfill diagnostic and consultation work in basic (6) and non-basic (2) clinics.

Annually about 6500 patients are investigated with radiology methods, including CT, MRI, US with color Doppler carting.
