History Data:

The Department of Medical Genetics of KMAPE was organized in 1989 on the basis of an independent course of medical genetics which existed from1987 at the Department of Neonatology KSIIP. Professor T.I.Buzhievskaya, Doctor of Medical Science, doctor - pediatrician and the doctor - geneticist of the supreme category, the Winner of the State premium of Ukraine, a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, was the founder of the course and Department. She headed the Department till 2000.

Since April 2000, the Department has been headed by Professor N.G.Gorovenko Doctor of Medical Science Honoroud Science and Technology Worker of Ukraine, Associate member of the AMS of Ukraine.

The Department is the base in post-graduate education system in medical and laboratory genetics in Ukraine.

Highly skilled staff members of the Department carry out pedagogical, medical and scientific work in different directions of medical and laboratory genetics, medical-genetic consultation of families, antenatal diagnosis of hereditary and congenital pathological conditions of a fetal, chromosomal analysis, biochemical diagnosis of infringements of a metabolic disorders, DNA-diagnostics of genetic damages in pre and postnatal periods, complex treatment of patients with bronchial asthma.

Teaching and Methodological Work:

The staff members of the Department perform the training and retraining in medical and laboratory genetics for geneticists doctor - laboratory geneticists and other specialties physicians.

Since 1994 more than 100 courses of thematic advanced training, specialization and pre-certification have been carried out. Total 1789 students have been trained.

In addition, lectures on medical genetics for physicians of allied faculties are delivered (obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, therapy, pediatrics, neonatology, neurology, otolaryngology, family medicine, anesthesiology, laboratory diagnostics, oncology, endocrinology, phthisiology, cardiology, urology, etc.), as well as for interns and clinical residents of these faculties.

The following courses are held at the Department:

Specialization: in medical genetics, laboratory genetics

Pre-certification: in medical genetics, laboratory genetics

Topical Advanced Training: “Lysosomic disease ( for pediatricians, neuropathologists, hematologists)”, “Modern problems of medical genetics (for teachers of clinical faculties of medical institutes and universities)”, “Stem cells. Theoretical aspects and practical importance ( for family medicine, therapeutist, neuropathologists, hematologists, oncologists, immunologists, pediatricians)”, “Hereditary pathology (for doctors - pediatricians, gynecologists, neonatologists, neuropathologists and others)”, “Hereditary pathology (for doctors - pediatricians, gynecologists, neonatologists, neuropathologists etc.)”.

The staff members of the Department have prepared 2 computerized teaching-monitoring programs in the Ukrainian language in specialties “Medical genetics”, “Laboratory genetics”, which have been authorized by The Ministry of Health of Ukraine. These programs are widely used in pedagogical process.

The Unified Programs for courses of thematic advanced training for doctors of different specialties, specializations of doctors and laboratory doctors in medical and laboratory genetics prerectification courses in specialties “Medical genetics”, “Laboratory genetics” have been prepared and approved. The Unified Program and the curriculum for doctors - interns In a speciality “Medical genetics” have been developed.

Programs for new courses of thematic advanced training have been developed and approved: “Genetic monitoring” for doctors of various specialties, “Polymerase chain reaction in diagnosis of genetic diseases” for doctors of all specialties who are interested in methods of molecular diagnostics of monogenic, multifactorial pathology, as well as the illnesses caused by viral or bacterial agents, “Lisosomic diseases” for geneticists and doctors of various specialties.

The workers of the medical-genetic centers and laboratories temporarily recalled on workplaces from different regions of Ukraine and Russia and are trained in modern techniques (molecular and cytogenetic) at the Department.

There is a possibility to train on a self-supporting basis under individual schedules at any above mentioned courses at the Department.

At the end of training, students receive a certificate of established sample.

Post-graduate students, interns, masters, clinical residents in specialties of medical and laboratory genetics are trained at the Department.

Scientific Research Activities:

The staff members of the Department provide serious scientific research work. As a whole, since 1994, 7 scientific themes have been carried out. The following scientific themes are being carried out at the Department:

1. “Development of differentiated programs of topical advanced training of medical personnel in different specialties and managers of public health services for carrying out genetic monitoring”

2. “Definition of the role of endogenous and exogenous factors in occurrence and progression of genetic and chromosomal pathology at different stages of ontogenesis” (2001-2005).

3. "Definition of virus insertion role in a genome of human cells in cardiovascular and cerebral pathologies or in case of sudden death"

4. "Estimation of the role of polymorphic markers in bronchial asthma pharmacogenetics"

20 Candidates and 2 theses for a Doctor's degree have been defended at the Department. More than 150 scientific works have been written, 72 efficiency proposals, 12 copyright certificates, 3 patents have been obtained, 3 monographies and textbook have been issued. For the last years 4 Candidate’s theses have been defended at the Department.

The staff of the Department takes an active participation in the organization of scientific conferences according to the register of МH of Ukraine: “Modern achievements of medical genetics” (1999), “The Food and medicamentous allergy” (2002), “Urgent conditions in allergology” (2003), “The genetic of multifactorial pathology”(2004), “The genetic aspects of diagnostic and treatment in modern medicine”(2006).

Through postgraduate study, 4 Candidates of medical science have been prepared, 3 day-time and 2 external post-graduate students are being trained now.

Clinical work:

Clinical bases of the Department are: the medical-genetic center of Ukrainian specialized children's hospital “OCHMATDET”, the Central polyclinic of Pecherskiy district of Kiev, the Department of a bronchial asthma of Institute of tuberculosis and pulmonology of the Academy of Мedical Sciences of Ukraine. The staff of the Department carries out significant diagnostic and medical work at these bases. The Department is the base for clinical tests of drugs of Pharmacological center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

There are close creative mutual relations with doctors of establishments of practical public health services of Kiev that allows to observe of patients and their families members of different age and to put the correct diagnosis, precisely to define the type of congenital anomalies and diseases, to determine carriers of mutations, a degree of a pathology risk for descendants, to prognosis of current illness, an opportunity and approaches to rehabilitation of family on maintenance of a birth of the healthy child.

Due to above the most modern genetic methods (clinical-genealogic, ultrasound, cytogenetic, biochemical, molecular-genetic) are used at the Department and patients receive recommendations on treatment of hereditary diseases and the further family planning of family.

International activities:

In 2002, the International Genetic Center equipped with the most modern diagnostic equipment for molecular-genetic and cytogenetic of researches which allows working at a high scientific - methodical level was organized and open in КМАPE. A real basis of creating of the center became close cooperation of the Department of medical genetics, with Director of Institute of Medical Genetics at the university of Zurich (Switzerland), the world famous expert, nowadays Honorable Doctor of КМАPE, Professor Albert Shintsel and his staff. The features of organizing of the Center are: absolute conformity of rooms of laboratories of the Center to sanitary-and-hygienic norms and the international technological standards; association of two laboratories - molecular-genetic and cytogenetic with general use of the modern equipment that has allowed one to carry out in Ukraine research on the basis of modern molecular-cytogenetic methods: FISH-technology - fluorescent іn sіtu hybridization and micro satellite DNA analysis. The third feature of the Center is an active scientific work on the development and introduction of new research methods of hereditary and acquired pathology on the basis of which not only grants and dissertational works of Ukrainian and foreign scientists officers are carried out, but also the spectrum of diseases which diagnosis can be carried out in the near future without going abroad. The center performs educational functions: teach experts geneticists and laboratory assistants - geneticists are taught in all techniques carried out at the cycles of specialization, thematic advanced training or on a workplace irrespective of departmental subordination, the place or the country of resident of a specialist.

The workers of the Department maintain the fruitful relations with leading geneticists from Russia, Poland, Switzerland, the Great Britain, Germany, the USA, Canada.
