History Data:

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology was created in August 1918 on the base of a polyclinic of clinical Institute of Kyiv Trade Union of doctors which according to the Decree of the Soviet Union of People’s Commissars from 24 July, 1919 was reorganized as a higher educational institution – Kyiv State Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians.

First, there were 2 Departments – the Department of Obstetrics which was organized and headed by Prof. H.F. Pysemsky Merited Worker of Science, and Department of Gynecology, organized and headed by Prof. V.L. Lozynsky. The both Departments were located in the building of Mariinskoye Society of Red Cross (Saksaganskogo st.) and there were only 30 hospital beds.

Later, the Department obtained additional bases for training of trainees-doctors and 210 more bed in hospitals for railway and water-transport workers. In addition the filiations of the Department were organized in the outlying districts: in the town of Korosten (headed by A.P. Mykolayiv, Assistant Professor) and in Chernihiv (the head of the office was Ya. N. Slupsky, Candidate of Medical Science).

The unification of the departments took place in 1946, and department the united department was headed by Prof. Yu. Ya. Yankelevych, the filiation of the department, which was housed in the Institute of Protection of Mother and Child, was headed by Prof. V. M. Khmelevsky. After that grate Patriotic war, the main base of the Department of Obstetrics, gynecology and Perinatology became the clinical department of obstetrics and gynecology of Kyiv Regional Clinical Hospital and after the construction of obstetrical building on the territory of the hospital, the department moved of its premises. Over 6,000 doctors took the courses of advanced training at the department between 1918 and 1990.

One can emphasize several periods in the work of the department.

The I period (1918 – 1937) – the Department was headed by Prof. Hryhoriy F. Pysemsky (born in 1862), Merited Worker of Science, Talented scientist, widely educated clinician who combined research, clinical and social work. He wrote about 60 scientific works, he was the President of Obstetrical-gynecological Society of Kyiv and Ukraine, participant of numerous international and national obstetrical congresses. In 1935, he was conferred the title of Merited Worker of Science. H.F.Pysemsky created his scientific-practical school which gave to the science numerous highly qualified obstetricians-gynecologists, among them 15 Professors and 14 Associate Professors. The major investigations were dedicated to the problems of cancer; early diagnosis of cancer of genital organs; carrying-out of mass prophylactic examinations of women; elaboration of methods of early diagnosis of female’s diseases by means of colposcope, development of issues of labor anesthesia. The most famous Prof. H.F.Pysemsky’s disciples are Yu. Ya. Yankelevych, S.P.Vynohradova.

The second period (1937 – 1952) was a complicated period, interrupted for several years by the Great Patriotic war. At that time, the department was headed by Prof. Yukhym Ya. Yankelevych (born in 1896), one of the most talented disciples of Prof. H.F.Pysemsky, whose advise he always introduced in practice. Prof. Yu.Yankelevych is the author of over 60 scientific works , 2 scientific inventions, besides, he was a consultant of 2 educational films – “Child birth” and “Mechanism of normal labor”. His Doctor’s Thesis was devoted to the problem of “Hemicolpoectomy in case of uterine and vaginal prolapse and age histoarchitectonics of vaginal wall”. Prof. Yu. Yankelevych was the first to introduce in medical practice cleidotomy on living fetus; he created original scissors for performing operations. A series of important issues were developed under the guidance of Prof. Yankelevych at the department, namely: prophylaxis of professional female’s diseases, principles of management of post-partum period, functional diagnostics in gynecology; use of female’s work in industry and agriculture as well as protection of women’s work in agriculture. 4 Candidate’s Thesis were defended, 32 scientific works were published at the department during that period. The following teaching staff members worked at the department: Associate Professors – P.H. Verkhohlyadov, D.A. Kinchiy, Assistants – M.I. Nedzvetska, A. A. Muradyan, M.S. Zyashenko, A.M. Syrkin who combined intensive work in clinic and pedagogical and research activities.

The third period (1952 – 1959) – the department was headed by Prof. Volodymyr M.Khmelevsky (born in 1900). In 1946, Prof. V. Khmelevsky defended his Doctor’s Thesis on the subject “Intensification of Labor Activity by Using Glucose and Calcium according to the Author’s Method”. In 1947, he began to work as Professor of the department and in 1952 he became the Heard of the department. More than 40 scientific work on urgent issues of obstetrics and gynecology by Prof. V. Khmelevsky.

In 1945, Prof. V. Khmelevsky was given the rank of a Merited Worker of Ukraine, he was decorated with a Medal “For Labor Valor during Great Patriotic war”. Prof. V. Khmelevsky was a member of the Academic Board of Health Ministry of Ukraine, a responsible secretary of the journal “Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology”, President of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Kyiv and Kyiv region. The scientific works of the Department were devoted to the problems of perinatal mortality, mortinatality, prophylaxis and therapy of intrauterine fetal hypoxia. 2 Candidates of Science were trained and 49 scientific works were performed within that period.

The fourth period (1959 – 1971) – the Department was headed by Prof. Vasyl. M. Savytsky (born in 1899). In 1955, he defended his thesis on the subject “Tissue Therapy of Diseases of Female’s Genital Apparatus” and was conferred the academic rank of a Doctor of Medical Science. Prof. V. Savytsky is the author of more than 40 clinical-laboratory and clinical works on urgent problems of obstetrics and gynecology.

2 Doctor’s and 12 Candidate’s Thesis were performed under the guidance of Prof. V. Savytsky. Prof. V. Savytsky is the author of a series of textbooks, methodological recommendations, monographs. Theoretical investigation of Prof. V. Savytsky dealt with the issues physiotherapeutic methods of treatment of woman’s genital diseases, methods of tissue therapy, diagnosis and chemotherapy of neoplasms. At that period the scientists of the department worked on the solution of the following problems: chemo- and hormonotherapy in malignant tumors of female’s genital organs; prophylaxis and management of hypotonic uterine bleeding during delivery and at an early postnatal period; investigation and treatment of chorionepithelioma (the Department was a Republican Centre on the problems of investigation of chorionepithelioma). The following staff members worked at the Department: Associate Professors: L. A. Hanul, A. A. Davydenko, M. S. Savytsky, Ye. P. Tryodin; Assistants: D. F. Berezovsky, S.V. Vinnychenko, V.K. Vinnytska, S. S. Leush, M. S. Sukachov. Prof. V. Savytsky headed the Department until 1971, and then till 1974, he worked as a Consultant.

The fifth period (1971-1993) – the department was headed by Prof. Leonid V.Tymoshenko (born in 1921), Associate Member of the Academies of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Ukraine, Russia and National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. 21 Doctor’s and over 100 Candidate’s Degrees were defended under the guidance of Prof. L. Tymoschenko. 16 of his disciples are the heads of the departments of obstetrics and gynecology in Ukraine, they work in the capacity of Associate Professors, Assistants, heads of departments. The following teaching staff members worked at the department at that period: I.K. Hamachek, V. Ya. Holota, Ye.I. Horobets, S.S. Leush and others. Prof. L. Tymoshenko is the author (and co-author) of more than 700 scientific works, including educational manuals and monographs.

The outstanding works are: “Alcohol Fetal Syndrome”, “Obstetric endocrinology”, “Hemolytic Disease of Fetus and Infant”, “Application of Laser Rays in Obstetrics and gynecology”.

Prof. L. Tymoshenko is a State Prize-Winner named after V.F. Snehiryov; he is awarded Zemelweis’ Medal, G Medals of Exhibitions of Economic Achievements of the USSR and Ukraine 2 badges ’’Excellent Worker of Public Health’’ , more than 20 Honorary Diplomas for scientific achievements, he has 14 battle Rewards as a participant of the Great Patriotic war. The major directions of scientific actives of Prof. L. Tymoshenko and the Department are: investigation of pathogenesis of hemolytic disease of fetus and newborn, neurohumoral regulation of contractile uterine activity and correction of its disturbances; risk factors of complications for mother and fetus; uterine hemorrhages in obstetrics, fetal hypoxia, newborn’s asphyxia; functional state of adaptation in pregnant and gynecological patients. Prof. L Tymoshenko carried out considerable editorial activities: he was Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Ukrainian Journal “Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology”, Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal “Obstetrics and Gynecology” ( Moscow, Sofia), Editor of a Section of Big Medical Encyclopaedia, member of Specialized Academic Boards on the defense of Doctor’s and Candidate’s These. On the initiative of Prof. L. Tymoshenko, a 10-floor building for obstetrics was built on the territory of Kyiv Regional Clinical Hospital where specialized departments (now- Kyiv Regional Centre of Mother and Child’s Health Protection as well as the department of obstetrics, gynecology and perinatology are housed Since 1996, Prof. L. Tymoshenko had been a Professor-Consultant of Kyiv Regional Centre of Mother and Child’s Health Protection ( the base of the Department).

Since June 1993, the department has been headed by Yuriy P. Volovychenko, a talented doctor, scientist and educationalist, one of the youngest professors of Ukraine.

Prof. Yu.P.Vdovychenko is a disciple of Prof. L.V.Tymoshenko. 2 Doctor’s and over 30 Candidate’s Theses have been performed under his guidance. Currently, the major scientific investigations are being carried out in the sphere of prophylaxis of purulent-septic complications in obstetrics and gynecology as well as prognostication prophylaxis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders of female’s reproductive function.

Prof. Yu.Vdovychenko combines work of great importance in clinic and the Academy; being the first Vice-Rector of KMAPE named after P.L.Shupyk, as well as the deputy Chairman of Specialized Academic Board D 26.613.02 for awarding Doctor’s (Candidate’s) Degree in specialities: anesthesiology and intensive therapy, obstetrics and gynecology, he is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Reproductive Women’s Health”. Since December of 2000 Prof. Yu.Vdovychenko has been elected a Member of the Commission of Experts of the Higher Certifying Committee of Ukraine.

Teaching and Methodological Work:

The following courses are held t the Department:

Specialization: “The general practice - family medicine”

Pre-certification: in obstetrics and gynecology, adolescent’s gynecology

Topical Advanced Training: “Endocrinology in obstetrics and gynecology”, “Actual problems of perinatology” (The order of MoH № 620), “Purulent-septic diseases in obstetrics and gynecology”, “Critical care in obstetrics and gynecology”, “Actual problems of perinatology” (The order of MoH № 620) (on departure), “Endocrinology in obstetrics and gynecology”, “Actual problems of women’s reproductive health” (The order of MoH № 503); “Modern fundamentals of prophylactic perinatology and family planning”, “Medico-social prophylactic measures for incomplete pregnancy in women’s consultation clinics, and children’s consultation clinics”.

The department may provide education at master’s course, clinical residency course, post-graduate course (full-time attendance and by correspondence) through commercial contract. The teaching staff members of the department have a big experience of pedagogical work with students of foreign countries.

The department organized and provides non-budget courses of topical advanced training on actual problems of obstetrics and gynecology out of Kyiv, both in Kyiv region and other regions.

Internship: in family medicine.

Today, 6 clinical residents (including 3 foreign subjects), 4 post-Graduates (full-time attendance, among them 1 foreigner) and 1 doctoral candidate (full-time attendance).

Training of Clinical Residents and Post-Graduates: Clinical residencies and post-graduate education. The Department conducts training of clinical residents (term of training 2 years) and postgraduate students (terms of study - 3 year in internal and 4 years in extra-mural course).

Scientific Research Activities:

“PROGNOSTICATION, PROPHYLAXIS, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF DISORDERS OF REPRODUCTIVE FUNCTION OF WOMEN AT CURRENT PERIOD”

Investigation object – more than 450 pregnant women in child-birth, their fetuses and new-born infants, 300 gynecological patients of adolescent, reproductive and climacteric age.

Study purpose – elaboration of effective methods of prognostication, prophylaxis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders of reproductive function of women with ecological, productive and medical risk factors at current periods as well as effective programmes of family planning , methods of prophylaxis of obstetrical and perinatal complications taking into account female’s age peculiarities, condition of somatic and reproductive health, influence of environmental adverse factors.

Methods of investigation – clinical, paraclinical, including functional, ultrasonic, microbiological, biochemical and radioimmunological ones (for evaluating the condition of system: ”mother-placenta-fetus” during gestation and reproductive function in non-pregnant women).

Terms of completion: 2005-2010.

Based on investigation carried out between 2005 and 2006, new approaches to prognostication and prophylaxis of perinatal losses in pregnant women of various risk group as well as the methods of preventing fetoplacental insufficiency in pregnant women having in their anamnesis perinatal losses, habitual incomplete pregnancy, thyrotoxicosis, neurocirculatory asthenia, syphilitic infection have been developed. In the aspect of planned themes, it has been elaborated the methods of preventing bleeding and purulent-inflammatory complications after Caesarian section in multiparous women. The programmes of family planning and correcting climacteric disorders in women residing in territories with high level of radioactive pollution have been suggested for implementing in practice. A complex of rehabilitation measures with the use of hormonal and antihomotoxic preparations, aimed at reducing recurrence rate and restoring reproductive function of women after conservative myomectomy has been substantiated scientifically.

11 Candidate’s and 1 Doctor’s Theses have been defended, 139 scientific works have been published among which 95 articles in leading journals and collections of scientific works; 15 licenses of Ukraine have been obtained according to results of scientific-research work.

Clinical work:

The clinical based of the department are located in Kyiv Regional Centre of Mother and Child’s Health Protection (150 hospital beds) and in gynecology department of Kyiv Regional Oncology Dispensary.

The Assistant of the Department L.A.Zhuravlyova (head-doctor of OKhMADYT) is responsible for clinical work. The indices of clinical work are consultations at Out-Patient Department, at In-patient Department, at extra-base establishments of Kyiv, at the establishments of Kyiv region, rendering medical care through sanitary aviation, Consultations through sanitary aviation, surgical interventions,

The curators of the department of clinical based are:

And the chiefs of the clinical departments of gynecology, observation, extragenital pathology, obstetrics of Kyiv Regional Centre of Mother and Child’s Health Protection are included in the staff of the department (they combine jobs).

All types of surgical interventions on pelvic organs, known in modern obstetrics and gynecology, including application of endoscopic techniques, are being performed by the staff members of the department at present.

International activities:

Clinical residents, masters and post-graduate students from foreign countries such as: India, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Morocco, Syria etc. Are taking training courses and traineeships at the department.

The staff members of the department have taken part in international scientific conferences, congresses, symposia in Prague (Chechia), Vienna (Austria), Baden0Baden (Germany), Moscow and St. Peterburg (Russia).
