History Data:
Examining a 85-years way of the P.L. Shupyk Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, among founders of it, in the head of the Department of obstetrics and gynaecology, one from four first, based in the Institute of a Trade Union of Medical Workers, we find widely known by that time, recognized in Kyiv and behind its limits, names of experts of Professors G.F. Pysemskyi (1862-1937) and V.L. Lozynsky (-1943). The talented disciple of Academician G.E. Reyn (1854-1942), Professor Grygory F. Pysemsky headed the Department, actually its obstetric division, till 1937. At the same time, he was leading the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology No. 1 of the Kyiv Medical Institute (now the A.A. Bohomolets National Medical University) and only in 1930 has conceded it to his disciple, Professor Oleksandr I. Krupsky (1875-1943), who till that time worked as a Director of the Faculty of Obstetric-Gynaecologic Clinic of the Odessa State Medical Institute.
Professor V.L. Lozynsky, the long-term secretary of the Kyiv scientific organization of obstetricians-gynaecologists, supervised the gynaecologic division of the Department. Both professors personified the best samples of humanity and the professional mastery of a physician, inherent in their talented predecessors on university clinic - professors O.O. Muratov, G.G.Briuno and others.
It is necessary to mention in particular a careful altitude of the Department staff to continuity, diligence to keep and improve experience of predecessors. Since the time, March, 22, 1880, when Heorhiy Ye. Reyn at elections to senior lecturers of the Medical-Surgical Academy conducted two trial lectures “On innervation of uterus” and “About ureteral and uterine fistulas”, the bases of reconstructive-regenerative surgery in obstetrics and gynaecology were laid as the foundation for all following 17 year period of his fruitful activity at the Department of Obstetrics and Female Diseases of the Saint Volodymyr Kyiv University (1883-1900). Quite naturally that precisely this direction has been laid into the bases of further scientific development and programs of improvement of professional skill of doctors in a newborn institute by his followers, by Professors H.F. Pysemsky and V.L. Lozynsky.
The history of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the institute, expanding its fields of activity with every year, can definitely be a display of an epoch and can be viewed by periods.
In 1935, the Department was divided into two parts. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology No. 1 was headed by Professor H.F. Pisemsky, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology No. 2 was headed by Professor V.L. Lozynsky. Such a division was kept in pre- and post-war times. Professor V.L. Lozynsky headed the Department closely before the Second World War and tragically died in 1943 during occupation of Kyiv.
The further fruitful activity of both departments took place in close cooperation, caused by the common understanding of programs of postgraduate training of doctors. During post-war period the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology No. 2 was headed by Professors S.P. Vynogradova, V.M. Hmelevsky, V.M.Savytsky, F.O. Peterbursky, A.O. Davydenko, E.V. Kohanevich. In its structure there had been working at different times Professors E.Ya. Stavska (Stavropol), R.A. Chertok (Voronezh), K.M. Zhmakin (Moscow), Academician of AMS of the USSR, Professor A.P. Nikolaev (Leningrad, Kyiv), B.L. Logvynsky, M.I. Nedzvetska, M.S. Liashenko, V.I. Babuhadiya, P.M. Savytsky, E.P. Triodin and others, by their research and creative scientific work a scientific school and strong authority of clinic were developed.
The formation of the Department on the ground of surgical rehabilitation of functions of pelvic organs, is connected with the name of Professor F.E. Peterbursky who headed the Department in 1959 and had been working there for about 15 years, and this direction is still developed carefully by professor’s disciples and it is the principal of a scientific work at the Department today. The range of scientific tastes and researches of the Department is rather huge and even under the incomplete list, it confirms its leading role and the powerful contribution to programs of postgraduate education: mechanisms of adaptation at pregnancy, foetus-placental mutual relations, a hypoxia, gestosis, an anaemia of pregnant women, habitual miscarriage and infertility, the prevention and treatment of uterine bleedings, postnatal purulent-septic complications, inflammatory diseases of genitals, pre-timorous conditions and tumours of uterus and appendages, reconstructive-regenerative interventions, surgical technologies, variants and methods of efferent therapies, etc., a lot of which are protected by copyright certificates and patents.
The first in the former USSR specialized Centre of diagnostics and treatment of trophoblastic tumour was created by solicitation of Professor M.K. Dal’, who had been running the Department of Anatomic Pathology KIATL for a long period of time, and Professor A.O. Davydenko, who had been running the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology No. 2 after F.O. Peterbursky. Also the first monograph about horionepithelioma was published in former USSR.
Last years, the Department fruitfully studies the program of the prevention and treatment of complications of pregnancy and delivery, endocrine infringements and techniques of HRT, techniques of reconstructive-regenerative surgery and rehabilitation of functions of female organism; it takes part in the development and introduction of modern methods of diagnostics and treatment.
Since 1985 to 2006 the Department headed by the disciple of professors I.I. Gryshchenka (Harkiv) and V.M. Savitsky (Kyiv) - professor S.S. Leush. Since 2006 the Department has been headed by A.M. Yuz’ko. Owing to his activities the number of educational research, medicopractical curricula has considerably been enriched by innovations of endoscopic interventions as well as up-to-date reproductive technologies.
the Department is an active working division of the Higher school, a medical, scientific, organizational-methodical, pedagogical establishment, which provides granting of highly particularized obstetric and gynaecologic help to the female population of Ukraine, Kyiv; carries out educational and pedagogical work according to tasks of postgraduate education and quality assurance of knowledge of experts. Employees of the Department carefully increase the traditions of the Department, which since 1999 has received the number “No. 1”, they assist to introduce the best achievements of obstetric schools of academician А.P. Nikolaev, professors I.I.Grishchenko, V.M.Savitsky, M.S.Baksheeva, F.E.Peterbursky, A.O.Davydenko in activity of clinical base.
The Department is well-known in Kyiv and beyond, due to the long-term fruitful traditions of scientific, educational and medical work in the system of obstetric aid.
The scientific-research program of the Department is caused by the social order of the female population of Ukraine that is based on survey researches, the annual analysis of parameters of health, requirement and a place of reconstructive-regenerative operations in a volume of surgical activity of the specialized clinic, results of performance of genetic programs, introductions in practical activities of research works of the Department and the developments of joint scientific research institutes of NAS and AMS Ukraine.
Distribution of experience of the Department on medical-advisory, organizational-methodical, scientific and educational works is provided by publications of results of research works in press, their introduction in practical activities, creation of methodical manuals, reference and test programs, preparation of experts on pre-certificate courses, courses of topical advanced training, in clinical internship and postgraduate study, primary specialization in internship, participation of employees of the Department in the work of the Association of Obstetricians-Gynaecologists, scientific organizations, congresses, conferences, etc., using unique, protected with patents and copyright certificates of the medical technologies, processed by employees of the Department.
Among the priorities, directed on improvement of parameters of activity of obstetrical establishment as a clinical base of higher educational establishment, improvements of the obstetrical and medical help to the female population, prevailing are:
Tasks of the Department, concerning vocational training of doctors:
a) Functions of the university clinic in a system of postgraduate preparation of the scientific and medical staff, creation of conditions for acquiring by interns, doctors - experts, clinical residents and postgraduate students the skills of practical activities at a world level.
b) Rendering of the highly skilled and specialized advisory, diagnostic and medical help to the female population at a level of modern achievements in biology and medicine, concerning a habitual miscarriage, threat of premature birth, early and late gestosis, an obstetric and extragenital pathology, risk of a bleeding, supervision and treatment of pregnant women after operations on uterus, the urgent obstetric help in case of complications.
c) Rendering of the urgent help to newborns from group of risk, reanimation, intensive therapy of respiratory and cardiovascular insufficiency syndrome, the immune conflict, traumas, hyper- and hyposomatotrophy, development defect, prophylaxis and treatment of post-reanimation lesions of central nervous system activity etc.
d) Medical-advisory help concerning lesion of reproductive function, in particular the endocrine genesis, at specific and not specific inflammatory diseases, barrenness, surgery of tubo barrenness, a syndrome of sclerogangliac ovary and others.
e) Surgical treatment, processing and introduction of methods of a delivery of pregnant women with the local canters of an infection, risk of purulent-septic complications, interruption of pregnancy in late terms, conservative and surgical treatments of miscarriages on a background of a fever, etc.
f) The medical-diagnostic help to women with neurodystrophic and hyperplastic processes, an endometriosis.
g) Surgical treatment of timorous diseases of sexual sphere, developmental anomalies of reproductive system in age aspect, in particular developmental anomalies of genitals, anomalies of position, a patrimonial and operational trauma (breaks, uric and intestinal - sexual fistulas), prolapsus of a vagina and a uterus, a stressful incontinence of urine, etc.
h) Functional surgery of tumours of uterus and appendages during time and outside of pregnancy with the purpose of preservation of function.
i) Surgical interventions concerning a syndrome of a pelvic pain after traumas, in result before the executed operations or tumours.
j) Testing and introduction in practice of modern samples of the medical-diagnostic equipment, medicines; distributions of experience among the medical community, the organization of exhibitions-seminars with involving representatives of domestic and foreign firms.
2. Functions of the Department
- Improvement of forms and methods of experts training on a speciality 14.01.01- Obstetrics and Gynaecology, topical advanced training in questions of functional and reconstructive-plastic surgery, gynaecologic endocrinology, ultrasonic diagnostics and a colposcopy, urgent conditions in obstetrics and gynaecology, etc.
- Development, introduction in practice, approbation of modern medical forms and the newest medical technologies, patent-license work..
- Medical-advisory scheduled and urgent work.
- Improvement of structure and function of modern clinical establishment, liquidation of a divergence of qualification of doctors of clinical base and teaching staff structure with the purpose of more fruitful use of experience and mental potential of this layer, improvement of continuity in questions of medical tactics.
- Involvement to the medical-diagnostic process of scientific and industrial potential of scientific research institute of NAS and AMS of Ukraine, and also the big enterprises, commercial structures on the basis of cooperation, processing, introduction in practice and testing of modern medical technologies, patent-licensing, etc.
Work of the Department in Obstetric ward:
The clinical base of the Department since 2000 is the City Maternity Hospital No. 1 which itself is the certain historical place of Kyiv.
Kyevers Cradle. Exactly this way, without the least exaggeration, it is possible to name a modern hospital complex, which was cosy placed at the corner of streets Leskova and Arsenalna, surrounded by modern constructions which have changed the look of ancient Pechersk. Its development and settling during XIX-XX has forced in 1918, on a turn of epochs, to build an obstetrical establishment in territory of a former fortress. The address of a Maternity Hospital No. 1 (5, Arsenalna Str., tel 296-52-09) is well-known to inhabitants of Pechersk district and to may kyevers, as that very medical institution where “crying gives joy”.
When founding, the Hospital acquired the name “March, 8”. The new obstetrical establishment occupied a worthy place among other obstetric clinics of Saint. Volodymyr University, Kyiv Female Medical Institute, obstetric-gynaecologic branches of Kyiv City Oleksandrivska Hospital, City Jewish Hospital, Tereshchenko’s maternity shelter in Kyiv, etc. the amount of beds at those hospitals did not satisfy the requirements of more than 550-thousand population of the city at that time. Eventually there were created and have been supported till now qualified medical collective, and traditions of devoted service to Mother and Child.
The Maternity Hospital No. 1 incorporates: obstetric ward for 100 beds, gynaecologic ward for 50 beds.
The work of the Department in the gynaecologic ward:
a) the Ward of operative gynaecology, 50-55 beds in the Kyiv Maternity Hospital No. 1 for rendering highly specialized medical-advisory help to women with anomalies of development and position of genitals, in particular gynatresias, non-malignant tumours and pre-tumorous conditions, hyperplastic processes of cervix of the uterus, with demands diathermo- and cryo-laser destruction, progressive abdominal pregnancy, tube infertility, an endometriosis, intestinal and urino-genital fistulas, etc., means of abdominal, vaginal and endoscopic surgeries.
b) Ward of the urgent surgical help and conservative gynaecology, 40 beds in Kyiv Road Clinical Hospital No. 1 for rendering qualified surgical and conservative help at the urgent conditions, caused by a bleeding from genital tracts, connected with the broken abdominal pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, trauma, infringement of blood circulation in tumours, inflammatory processes, peritonitis, sepsis, and also for scheduled surgical interventions concerning intestinal-genital fistulas, breaks of a perineum of the 3rd degree, conservative treatment and rehabilitation of functions of genitals at acute and chronic inflammatory processes, endocrine gynaecologic syndromes, etc.
The conclusion.
The short list of functional duties and professional opportunities of the Department with a huge, settled experience of postgraduate education of experts is resulted.
The teaching staff of the Department has sufficient experience, which covers all sections of obstetrics and gynaecology, is held in respect of medical community in Kyiv, Ukraine and behind their borders.
The clinical base of the Department is the recognized cell of multiple-discipline surgical activity.

Clinical residencies and post-graduate education. The Department conducts training of clinical residents (term of training 2 years) and postgraduate students (terms of study - 3 year in internal and 4 years in extra-mural course).
Scientific Research Activities:
The Department carries out scientific-research work on a theme: “Rehabilitation of functions of a female organism” (the state registration No. 0102V004021, date of registration 04.06.02.).
As a result of scientific activity, the Department developed a lot of the latest techniques. Among them:
- technique of definition of correlation connection of a degree of a hypovolemic syndrome of pregnant women with a high blood pressure in ІІІ a trimester of pregnancy.
- technique of complex treatment bacterial vagynosis at planning pregnancy.
- technique of treatment urino-genital candidosis at different clinical variants of its passing.
- Standards of practical skills on obstetrics and gynaecology for the doctor-expert, printed in the manual.
- technique of complex actions of preventive maintenance of a gestosis at pregnant women of high risk group.
- Eferent therapy method in a complex of prophylactics and treatment of inflammatory-absorptive processes in obstetrics.
The developed techniques are introduced into practice of a base Maternity Hospital No. 1, Road Clinical Hospital No. 1, Female consultations of Pechersk and Desnjansky districts.
Employees of the Department take active participation in the development of manuals.
Clinical work:
Employees of the Department perform advisory work in base medical establishments, give the highly skilled medical help to patients in gynaecologic and obstetric wards, carry out the specialized advisory receptions on a gynaecologic endocrinology, treatments of infertility, pathology of cervix of the uterus and ultrasonic diagnostics.
International activities:
A number of teachers of the Department passed their probation training abroad.
