History Data:
The Department of Children’s Neurology and Medical-Social Rehabilitation was organized according to the order of the rector of NMAPE as of 24.11.2003, No. 2210. It was also done in compliance with Protocol No. 3 as of 31.07.2003, paragraph 5, approved by the Inter-Departmental Coordinating Board (attached to the Ministry of Ukraine) in problems of early social rehabilitation of handicapped children, and according to the decision of the Council, conducted by the Minister of Public Health of Ukraine, as of 11.07.2003, paragraph 7.2 “On the state of affairs in children’s neurology service and in centers (departments) of medical-social rehabilitation of children with organic lesion of the nervous system”, also to the Protocol No. 9, as of 12.11.2003 of the Academic Council of P.L. Shupyk KMAPE.
The Department was organized to train doctors-podiatrists, neurologists, children’s psychiatrists and psychologists, speech therapists, social pedagogues and others, who work in institutions subordinate to different departments for children with limited ability of health (Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and others).
The Department was founded on the basis of the Ukrainian Medical Center for rehabilitation of children with organic lesion of nervous system of the Ministry of Public Health, Kyiv City Children’s Clinical Hospital No. 1 and the Ukrainian Specialized Hospital “OHMATDYT”. Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor V.Yu. Martyniuk was appointed to the position of the head of the Department.
The main purposes brought up for the new Department “Children’s Neurology and Medical-Social Rehabilitation”, should be considered within the context of the State policy in the sphere of Public Health Protection, where the important role belongs to the development of medical-organizational technologies, which will help to improve assistance for children with limited abilities of health. First of all, it is true for the establishment of main regulations in social pediatrics in Ukraine, which conceptually organizes the living space of a child in the society, taking to account his / her health condition. Social pediatrics as a science assists in solving the problems of every single child, grounding on an interdisciplinary approach and with the usage of inter-profile spectrum of methods in pediatrics, epidemiology, psychology and psychology of development, neurology and neurology of development, psychiatry and narcology, health economics.
Teaching and Methodological Work:

Topical Advanced Training: Perinatal Neurology (for pediatrists, neonatologists, children’s neurologists); Children’s Neurology (for neuropathologists, children’s neurologists); Medical-social rehabilitation of children with limited health abilities (for children’s neurologists, children’s psychiatrists, the heads of Centers for children’s rehabilitation, children’s homes); Medical-social-pedagogical rehabilitation of children with limited health abilities (for children’s psychologists, speech therapists, special pedagogues, social pedagogues, teachers-rehabilitologists, children’s psychiatrists, teachers, children’s neurologists, pediatrists of centers for rehabilitation,1 month);
- “Epilepsy and convulsive states of children”. For children’s neurologists, children’s psychiatrists, pediatrists.
- “Inflammatory diseases of nervous system of children”. For children’s neurologists, children’s infectiologists, children’s anesthesiologists, pediatrists.
- Time-urgent pathology of nervous system of children”. For children’s neurosurgeons, children’s anesthesiologists, children’s neurologists, pediatrists.
Courses of information and probation: “Actual questions of children’s neurology”. For leading children’s neurologists of the departments of Public Health Protection, children’s neurologists, pediatrists; “Neurophysiologic checkup of children”. For children’s neurologists, doctors of functional diagnostics; “Neuroorthopedic correction of children with organic lesion of nervous system”. For orthopedists-traumatologists, children’s doctors of exercise therapy, children’s neurologists, physiotherapists.
A self-financing 1-week course of thematic advanced training “Medicosocial rehabilitation of children with limited health capabilities” (11.11.08 – 15.11.08, Tuesday-Saturday) has been planned at the Department of Children’s Neurology and Medical-Social Rehabilitation of the NMAPE named after P.L.Shupyk. Tuition fee per week is Hrn. 400.
Within a week, lectures and practicals delivered by experts from Germany have been scheduled: Professor Hubertus von Voss of social pediatrics as well as neonatolosits, genetisists, physical rehabilitations specialists.
Themes of the course:
1. Professor Hubertus von Voss: Further development of social
pediatrics in Ukraine.
2. Phusical Therapist: Updated methods of physical therapy
(Voyta-therapy, Bobat-therapy).
3. Neonatolosits: Intensive care and premature neonates
nursing.
4. Genetisists: Up-to date achievements in neurogenetics.

Possibilities of cooperation with the European Academy of Children’s Rehabilitation, Russian Academy of Medical-Social Rehabilitation and the Institute of Social Pediatrics, epidemiology and adolescent medicine, attached to the Ludwig-Maximilian University, the Institute of medical rehabilitation problems, are in the process of investigation.
