History Data:

The first step for creating an independent discipline – Children’s  Otorhinolaryngology in Ukraine was the initiation of a course of lectures in children’s INT-pathology by O.S Kolomiychenko in 1936, who at that period worked in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians (KIATP).

In September 1968 a course of children’s otorhinolaryngology was opened attached to the Department of Otorhhinolaryngology at KIATP by Prof. S.I. Mostovoy on the base of Kyiv Region Clinical Hospital.

In January 1969 the independent Department of children’s otorhinolaryngology was created and due to this fact children’s otorhinolaryngology became an independent discipline. The otorhinolaryngology department of Children’s Municipal Specialized Hospital №14 (60 beds) became the teaching one for the department.

Prof. Ye. A. Yevdoschenko was the first Head and organizer of the department (1969-1975).

In May 1975 the department was reorganized into an associate-professor’s course headed by Associate-Professor A.A. Layko, follower of Prof. S.I.Mostovoy. In 1990 the department received its independent status again. The department was headed by Prof. A.A. Layko up to 2001.

Since 2002 the department has been headed by Prof. A.L. Kosakovskyi, follower of Prof O.A. Yevdoschenko.

In 2005 the department was renamed into the Department of Children’s Otorhinolaryngology, Audiology and Phoniatrics. Today the Department of Children’s Otorhinolaryngology, Audiology and Phoniatrics is a scientific, methodologic and medical center of children’s otorhinolaryngology in Ukraine.

Clinical bases of the department are National Children’s specialized Hospital “OKMATDYT” (Head clinical base since creating the department (1969), Kyiv City Children’s Clinical hospital №1 (since 1989), State Institution “Institute of Otolaryngology named after O.S. Kolomiychenko of the AMS of Ukraine” (since 2004).

Teaching and methodic work:

The courses of specialization, topical advanced training, precertification for trainees-doctors in children’s otorhinolaryngology, audiology and phoniatrics as well as internship, clinical residency and postgraduate courses are held at the department.

Teaching process is provided with corresponding curricula and syllabi for internship in children’s otorhinolaryngology, specialization in children’s otorhinolaryngology and audiology, traineeship in children’s otorhinolaryngology, topical advanced training in children’s otorhinolaryngology, audiology and phoniatrics.

Models of practical skills, algorithms, situation problems, testing issues in children’s otorhinolaryngology and audiology have been developed, lectures accompanied by multimedia and videofilms have been prepared, 3 textbooks, 27 educational and methodical manuals and reference books have been published and annually a number of educational and methodic articles, educational and methodic articles are published at the department.

In Ukraine, the department is the only and leading department in 2 specialties: children’s otorhinolaryngology and audiology.

Scientific activity:

The major scientific direction of the Department – Developing and improving methods for diagnosing and treating diseases of upper respiratory ways and ear in children.

Over 700 scientific works including 10 monographs, 3 textbooks, 27 manuals have been published by staff members of the Department. 3 Doctorate (A.A.Layko, T.C. Mostova, A.L. Kosakovskyi), 8 Candidate dissertations (L.P. Chyrkova, M.O. Melnyk, V.V. Synyachenko, Yu.A. Molochek, O.Yu.Bredun, V.V.Oliynyk, Ya.V. Shkorbotun, I.A. Kosakivska) have been defended, more than 50 inventions and about 230 rationalization proposals have been worked out, 2 Certificates of copyright registration have been obtained. Staff members of the Department have suggested original methods of diagnosis, conservative and surgical treatment of INT-diseases, new instruments wich are widely used by pediatric otorhinolaryngologists in medical practice both in Ukraine and abroad.

An original mouth dilator for operating on lymphatic ring has been worked out which allows a voiding intubations tube displacement when operating and considerably reducing the time of surgical interventions. Technologies of tonsillectomy and adenotomy under anesthesia, technology of treating acute and cicatricial laryngeal stenoses, intratissular ultra phonophoresis of medicinal substances, new ways of septoplasty, ENT organs surgical interventions by using electrowelding biological tissues have been developed.

The Department of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, Audiology and Phoniatrics of NMAPE named after P.L. Shupyk is a scientific and methodological center of Pediatric otorhinolaryngology in Ukraine. The Department is a leading one in specialty “Pediatric Otolaryngology” and “Audiology”.
