History Data:
The Chair of Virology was founded as a part of Kiev Institute for the Advancement of Physicians (KIAP) on the 10th of March of 1985 according to Order # 822 of the 2nd of August of 1984 by the Soviet Union Ministry of Health. Founder and the first head of Chair was Girin Vitaliy Mikolayovich, doctor of medical science, professor and member of the Science Academy of the Higher School of Ukraine, the honored science and technology worker, President of KIAP, that was lately renamed the Kiyv Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education.
Professor Girin V. M. was an alumnus of the Kyiv scientific school of microbiologists and virologists, one of the founders of the new important field of science in Ukraine – sanitary microbiology and virology. Professor Dzyblik I. V. has been heading the Chair since April 2002. Her scientific and pedagogical experience amounts to 26 years. She is a Physician of Highest Rank. Dzyblik I. V. is an expert in rotavirus and VIH infections, chemotherapy and prevention of virus diseases, interferon and its inductor issues. She is the author of more than 230 publications including 11 patents and certificates of authorship, is a coauthor of four manuals and textbooks in virology. Dzuyblik I. V. is a member of the Ministry of Health and the Academy of Medical Science of Ukraine Commission for Control and Rational Use of Antibiotics and Antiviral Drugs in Ukraine.
Teaching and Methodological Work:
The educational and methodical work is carried out On two educational clinical bases (Kiev Clinical hospital #5 and at the Institute of cellular therapy) Chair’s premises, totaling 400 square meters of space, including a certificated room for working with viruses of the third and fourth categories of pathogenity (certification granted on 22 July 2002), state-of-the-art medical equipment, and a vivarium. The modern technical resources (INTERNET, computing, multimedia, photocopying equipment, projection and video facilities) are broadly used in the educational process.
The following lecture series are carried out by the Chair according to budget and commercial programs and plans that approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and by individual plans of participants:

-
For the first time a new highly immunogenous vaccine for prevention of rotoviral gastroenteritis was created. Prepared and approved normative-technical documentation for “The new vaccine with increased immunogenity for prevention in rotaviral gastroenteritis” for veterinary use. The vaccine has passed the State tests and was recommended for industrial production.
-
A new biotechnology of virus cultivation in synchronic cell systems with application of macromolecular platinum complex was developed.
-
A new compound was offered, that binds pathogenous chemicals, bacteria and heavy metals, extracts them from the organism, as well as replenishes organism with micro- and macro-elements.
-
The new biotechnology for cultivate cellular cultures of the humans and animals in a fixed-bed system from tapes of polythene.
-
Was developed the technique of medical product "Laferon"application in complex therapy rotavirus infection at newborns.
-
Was developed a new technique of complex inspection of newborns from risk groups on presence infections by viruses of a hepatites B and C.

Clinical work:
Consulting support in issues of viral infections is constantly provided to institutions of practical medicine by collaborators of the Chair who work as consultants and experts of Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
The Chair’s laboratory is authorized by the City Regime Commission to work with viruses of the third and fourth pathogenity categories (certification granted on July 22, 2002). Material and technical facilities of the laboratory of the Chair of Virology, presence of the collection (museum) of both pure and clinically obtained stamps of pathogenous viruses, as well as qualification of the personnel, allow performing all kinds of tests on laboratory animals, cell cultures and chicken embryos. In early 2003, the Chair of Virology was accredited by the Pharmacological Committee of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to conduct specific pharmacological tests of antiviral, virucidal, disinfecting drugs, as well as to perform virological scientific research, related to clinical tests of the medicine.
The Ministry of Health of Ukraine Hygienic Regulations Committee has accredited the laboratory of the Chair of Virology to perform research on hygienic specification of potentially dangerous factors of biological (viral) origin (accreditation granted on June 17, 1999).
The State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service of Ukraine of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine has issued a certificate of attestation, granting the laboratory of the Chair of Virology the right to perform medical, biological, sanitary-virological and other virological research, related to safety of products for human health. (Certificate of Attestation issued on June 17, 1999).
The base laboratory of the Chair of Virology is authorized to:
Perform medical and biological tests of food raw materials and foodstuffs for virological parameters, and to make conclusions as to biological impact of those parameters and possibility of using the food for human consumption;
Perform sanitary and virological tests of food raw materials, foodstuffs, potable water, non-alcoholic and low-alcohol beverages, mineral waters, environmental objects, household items, equipment and individual devices for additional purification of potable water, etc.;
Assess the virucidal and decontamination activity of disinfectants, surface-active compounds, shampoos and soap with bactericidal and virucidal properties, other detergents.
After tests have been conducted, the medical test program is issued, along with the protocols of medical tests results and other official documents, as required.
The Chair’s employees conduct the expert assessment for certification and registration of means of individual protection, condoms (determining the barrier properties relative to agent, causing HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, and other sexually transmitted diseases), glassware for virological research and cell culture cultivation, equipment for modern diagnostic research using immune-ferment analysis techniques, devices for purification of potable water from viruses, in Ukraine.
