Historical Background:

The Chair of Virology was founded as a part of Kiev Institute for the Advancement of Physicians (KIAP) on the 10th of March of 1985 according to Order № 822 of the 2nd of August of 1984 by the Soviet Union Ministry of Health. Founder and the first head of Chair was Girin Vitaliy Mikolayovich, doctor of medical science, professor and member of the Science Academy of the Higher School of Ukraine, the honored science and technology worker, President of KIAP, that was lately renamed in Kyiv Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education. Professor V. Girin was the graduate of the Kiev school of microbiologists and virologists, one of the founders of the new Ukrainian contemporary field of science - health microbiology and virology.

Since 2002 the Department of Virology has been heading by his disciple, Honored Doctor of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences I. Dzyublik - a specialist in problems of rotavirus, HIV infection/ AIDS, chemotherapy and prophylaxis of viral infections, interferon inducers and interferon. I. Dzyublik is the author of more than 350 scientific papers, 12 inventor's certificates and patents, and author or coauthor of 20 textbooks and manuals on virology. I. Dzyublik is the the Member of the Commission and the Ministry of Health of Sciences of Ukraine to monitor the rational use of antibacterial and antiviral agents in Ukraine, the member of the Coordinating Council on combating highly pathogenic avian influenza prevention and pandemic influenza, a member of the Specialized Scientific Council D26.003.01 of the National Medical University Bogomoletz Ministry of Ukraine, the member of editorial boards of many scientific publications.

Teaching and Methodological Work:

The educational and methodical work is carried out On two educational clinical bases (Kiev Clinical hospital №5 and  at the Institute of cellular therapy)  Chair’s premises, totaling 400 square meters of space, including a certificated room for working with viruses of the third and fourth categories of pathogenity (certification granted on 22 July 2002), state-of-the-art medical equipment, and a vivarium.  The modern technical resources (INTERNET, computing, multimedia,  photocopying equipment, projection and video facilities) are broadly used  in the educational process.

According to approved programs and plans  by the Ministry of Public Health  on budgetary and extra-budgetary basis, as well as an individual plans, the department carried out such courses:

Specialization in Virology.

Preparation of a physician-virologist /specialist-virologist (for doctors who have completed an internship at one of the specialties of health-care profile) as well as specialists with higher biological education.

Pre-certification courses on specialty "Virology" (for physicians-virologists/ specialists-virologists)
