Department of Microbiology and EpidemiologyTeaching Staff:
History Data: The Department of Microbiology was first organized in 1921, in the Kyiv State Institute of Advanced Training of doctors. The founder and the first head of the Department was Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor M.H.Benyash, who had been running the Department till 1941. Till 1932, the Department was training mainly doctors-clinical laboratory assistants, and in this connection it was named the Department of Microbiology and Laboratory Diagnostics. At the same time, the training of specialists on the base of Kyiv City Prophylactic-Epidemiological Station had been conducted. Since 1932, it was mainly doctors-microbiologists who were improving their specialists’ skills there, and since that time, it was named the Department of Microbiology. During the pre-war period, the average graduation amount was nearly 30-40 persons per year, on condition of 6 month courses in specialization. From 1938 to 1941, Doctor of Medical Sciences H.S. Barh was working as a second professor of the Department, and as assistant professors - Ya.B. Elbert (1932-1938) and S.I. Feldman (1938-1941). At this time the Department of Microbiology was situated in the main building of the Kyiv State Institute of Advanced Training of doctors in a separate wing and had 6 classrooms and a couple of additional premises. Since 1944, after the liberation from fascist occupation of Kyiv, the Department of Microbiology recommenced its activity. From 1944 to 1955, the Department was headed by the Full Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Professor V.H. Drobotko (1885-1966), a famous epidemiologist who elaborated the statement about the essence of dissociation of microorganisms; his main scientific works were devoted to the problems of agricultural, medical and industrial microbiology, antibiotics of vegetable origin, etc. During 1953-1963, the Department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor S.S. Rechmensky, a famous specialist in airmicrobiology. Since 1965, the Department was located at the premises of the administrative-theoretical building of the Kyiv State Institute of Advanced Training of Doctors (9, Dorogozhytska Str.) where it is located now. From 1963 to 1975, the Department of Microbiology was headed by Assistant Professor F.D. Povelytsia. From 1976 to 1997, the Department of Microbiology was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, the USSR State Prizewinner, V.O. Znamensky Professor I.P. Bilko was the deputy head of the Department of Microbiology since April, 1997, and since January, 1998, to September 1999 was the head of the Department. In 1999, the Department of Microbiology was joined by the Department of Epidemiology, and since that time it was called the Department of Microbiology and Epidemiology. From 2009 the Department is headed by Professor V.V.Havura. Teaching and Methodological Work: The following courses are developed at the department: Specialization: in bacteriology, epidemiology Pre-certification: in bacteriology, epidemiology; Topical Advanced: “Microbiology of infectious diseases of a human with a bacterial aetiology, passing through fecal-oral ways”; “Microbiology of infectious diseases of a human with a bacterial aetiology, passing through respiratory ways”; Microbiology of infectious diseases of a human, passing through genital ways”; ”Microecology of human organism”. Internship: in bacteriology, in epidemiology Scientific Research Activities: Nowadays, the main scientific directions of the Department are: developing of methods of diagnostics and correction of dysbacteriosis of a human; developing and testing new adsorbent medicines with antibacterial and antivirus spectrum of activity; development of new probiotic medicines for correction and treatment of microecology of organism disturbance; studying the antimicrobial activity of antimicrobial preparations; development of new methods of microbiological diagnostics of tuberculosis and diphtheria; epidemiology of rotavirus infection of children in modern stage, evolution of epidemiological process of leptospirosis in Ukraine and others.
