History Data: The Chair of infectious diseases was formed in 1934. The first Head of Chair was professor F.M.Zyukov. The Chair also numbered two assistants – L.D.Rabinovich and B.M. Erusalimski. During WW2, the Chair stopped its work and recommenced in 1945. Professor B.Y.Padalko was elected the Head of the Chair. In 1953, the Chair had two Professor Assistants – V.Y.Yaschenko and B.M.Erusalimski, and two assistants – A.I.Nanikova-Bogdanivich and I.G.Kubasov. From 1953 to 1968, the Chair was headed by Professor G.I. Homenko; and from 1969 to 1988 – by Professor I.K. Mitchenko. During this time, the Chair numbered: Professor Assistants M.I. Slobodanyuk and V.M. Pletnyov; Assistants I.G. Kubasov, D.O. Bugera, I.G. Semenchenko, A.M. Golubenko. In 1982-83, assistants V.S. Topolnitsky, O.M. Degtyarenko; in 1990, assistant V.P. Galuzinski; and in 1999 assistant Y.A. Sukhov have joined the Chair. In 1960, a laboratory was formed at the Chair, which had 4 specialists: 1 chief laboratory assistant, 2 laboratory assistants, and 1 preparatory. From 2009 and until present time, Professor O.K.Duda heads the Chair. The Chair have prepared 2 Doctor of Medical Sciences - I.K. Mitchenko and V.M. Pletnyov, 19 Candidates of Medical Sciences - B.M. Erusalimski, L.D. Rabinovich, I.G. Kubasov, N.V. Tatianko, I.S. Suk, L.M. Maksimets, N.I. Zaloeva, N.B. Yurkovska, I.G. Semenchenko, A.M. Golubenko, V.S. Topolnitsky, O.M. Degtyarenko, S.N. Bychkovski, A.F. Frolov, V.N. Yaschenko, M.G. Makreeva, O.P. Adamovich, Yu.A. Sukhov, O.L. Kolyada. 48 clinical ordinators and 2 masters of Arts have passed the training, 12 doctors have studied in post-graduate course, 1 doctor study in post-graduate course now. The Chair was the first in Ukraine to develop the program, thematic plan, and computer test-control for infectionists of II, I, and highest category, as well as for interns, test-controls for family doctors training Annually, until 1983, the Chair kept training the students for specialization and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills of infectionists. Later thematically improvement was introduced. Striating from 1990-91, the Chair carries pre-certification cycles and thematically improvement cycles; and in 1998, the specialization has been recommenced. Every year, the number of doctors who have passed training at the Chair rises. During the existence of the Chair, the number of students exceeded 11000. Teaching and Methodological Activities: The Chair carries out the following courses: Specialization (6 months long) — “Infectious diseases” (after group complicating) Pre-attestation (1 month) — “Infectious diseases”, 2-4 times per year Thematically improvement — “Intestinal infections, viral hepatitis, HIV-infection”, 78 hours, 2 week; “HIV-infection and AIDS, viral hepatitis, intestinal infections”, 156 hours, 1 month; "HAART therapy" 78 hours, 2 week. Interns — “Infections diseases”, from 01.09, annually. It is possible to conduct all listed courses on contract basis at post-graduate, masters and clinical ordinatorship. Scientific Activities: The research effort is conducted in three directions: Study of clinical features and development of effective methods of treatment of dysentery, enteric typhoid (G.I. Homenko, I.G. Kubasov, I.K. Mitchenko, Yu.A. Sukhov). Study of pathogenesis, clinics, diagnosis, treatment of influenza (M.I. Slobodanyuk, V.M. Pletnyov). Study of clinics, features of course, variants, indices of immunity, fibrillation of blood and fibrinolytic system, precallycreine-kinin system under viral hepatitis; clinical-genetic features, immunoallergic rebuilding of organism under viral hepatitis (I.K. Mitchenko, I.G. Semenchenko, A.M. Golubenko, V.S. Topolnitsky and O.M. Degtyarenko). At the current time, the faculty continues the study of problems of viral hepatitis, intestinal infections, leptospirosis, highly dangerous infections, cholera, etc., as well as principles of chemotherapy, intensive therapy and reanimation, immunostimulating methods of treatment. The results of scientific research are implemented in practical work of infections and polyclinics departments in medical institutions of Ukraine (see implementation Acts). The Chair continues its scientific research cooperation with Ukrainian scientific center of Radiology medicine of MHC and As of Ukraine and with Ukrainian and Scientific research institute of non-organic chemistry of AS of Ukraine and Institute of chemistry of surfaces. In 2002, the Chair took part in Forum of infectionists of Ukraine and two conferences, two international conferences. The Chair continues to develop a new theme of Scientific research and plans to receive on its basis a license for rationalization proposal and copyright certificate. The results of scientific research was publications in 12 journals and communications. The Chair gave 5 reports on the State level and 5 – on Regional and Municipal level. Under the direction of Professor V.V. Gebesh, Yu.A. Sukhov is preparing doctorate dissertation on problems of clinical features and development of effective methods of treatment of acute intestinal infections. The members of the Chair have published over 850 scientific works, 3 monographs, 2 textbooks for medical universities, and 15 collections of scientific works on infectious diseases. The members are co-authors of 5 monographs: prof. V.V. Gebesh, prof. assistant V.S. Topolnitsky, assistant V.P. Galuzinski, hand-book on differential diagnosis of infectious diseases: prof. V.V. Gebesh, prof. I.K. Mitchenko. The members of the Chair have prepared and published 32 methodical recommendations for practical works on topical questions of infectious pathology. Clinical work: The basis hospital for the Chair is Kyiv City Clinical hospital N 4; infectious diseases department has 80 spots and infectious reanimation has 6. All members of the Chair carry out consultative work (the Head of the Chair, professor, professor assistants and assistants). Scientific practical conferences, lections, seminars have been conducted for doctors which are working at practical health care. International Activities: The Chair participates in international scientific conferences on actual problems of infectology.
