History Data: Department of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics (first and for long time alone in former USSR) was organized in 1970 in Kyiv Medical Institute for Postgraduate Education (Rector – Prof. M.Umovist) on the ground of Gerontology Institute for purpose of physicians postgraduate education in the field of geriatrics. The first Head of Department was Director og Gerontology Institute, academician of AMS USSR Chebotarev D.F. (as part-time work). Prof. Kalinovska O.H. was elected as Head of department in 1972. They all have been followers of Academician of Ukrainian AMS Prof. Korkushko O.V., which was also one of the part-time lecturer of our Department in 1972-1974. Since 1990 Prof. A.Tokar, MD, PhD (laureate of State award of Ukraine) was the head of Department. He was Principal geriatrician of Ukrainian Health Ministry as well. In 2001 Department was renamed as Internal Medicine and Geriatrics Department and Dr.Leonid Stadniuk, MD, PhD, was elected as Head of Department (in 2002). In July 2005 he also headed State educational geriatric Centre (SEGC) which was founded by Department and Gerontology Institute (approved by Ukrainian Health Ministry). The main task of SEGC is conducting of work on standardization of pre- and post-graduate education of medical and social workers, and also volunteers and general population for medical and social assistance of elderly people. Educational - methodical work: Scientifical activity: At present the Department is to work on " Optimization approach of treatment of elderly patients with a hyperpiesis and ischemic heart disease at presence of concomitant lesion of liver ", which completed two master's theses and 2 Ph.D. theses carried out. Clinical work: Faculty consult in the clinic departments of the Institute of Gerontology AMS Ukraine, Ukrainian State departments of medical and social center of war veterans and the Kyiv City Hospital disabled veterans, as well as conduct caration of patients in the Cathedral office. International Activities: Four teachers of the department speak English. Teaching a foreign language is not, however, possible teaching courses on echocardiography English. The department participates in international projects: project MATRA (2007 2010rr.) Regarding the development of new programs geriatric training and improvement of the interaction of various stages of medical and social support elderly people, the draft International Fund "Renaissance" (2010-2011) in relation to development and implementation of training programs nurses and teachers of medical colleges in providing palliative care.
