Department of Palliative and Hospice Medicine

Hystorical reference: According to the WHO definition, palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual. The Department of palliative and hospice medicine of National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education of Ministry of Health of Ukraine (PCM Department) was established in 2010 according to the Decree of NMAPE Scientific Board and Rector of NMAPE order of 01.12.2010 № 3702. The Head of the NMAPE Department of palliative and hospice medicine was appointed Professor Gubskyi Iurii, Doctor of medical sciences, Corresponding Member of National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Director of the Institute of Palliative and Hospice Medicine of Ministry of Health of Ukraine. The first graduating class of physicians in palliative and hospice medicine was turned out by the Department of palliative and hospice medicine of NMAPE in September 2010.
Educational activity of the department: The contingent of Department students constitute physicians who practice in the field of palliative and hospice care, including oncologists, general practitioners, geriatrists, therapeutists, psyciatrists, health service managers etc. The Educational Programmes worked out by the PCM Department include lectures, seminars and practical classes. The duration of teaching/school periods is 39, 78 and 156 hours. The special educational classes are worked out and proposed for nurses that work in the special palliative care and hospice clinics.
Clinical centres of the department: The clinical centres of the department are as follows: Policlinic (out-patients'clinic) № 1 of Kiev Pechersky district; Department of Palliative Care of Kiev Communal Clinical Hospital № 2; Department of Palliative Care of Kiev Communal Special Oncology Clinic.
Professor Gubskyi Iurii, Doctor of medical sciences, Corresponding Member of National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, is delivering a lecture in palliative and hospice care for oncologists in Chercassy.
Senior Lecturer of PCM Dewpartment A.Tsarenko and Head of Kiev Communal Clinical Hospital № 2, A.Voronin are discussing the issues of palliative and hospice care in Europe with Daniela Moshoyi, EAPHC (European Association of Palliative and Hospice Care) expert (Rumania)..
Scientific activity of the department: The Department of palliative and hospice medicine of NMAPE works out the actual scientific problems of palliative and hospice medicine system in Ukraine formation, improving of palliative care specialists’ training, analysis of current legislative base of medical use of doctoral substances that contain narcotic (opioid) and psychotropic substances for palliative patients.
International activities of the department: The Department of palliative and hospice medicine of NMAPE in close cooperation with the Institute of Palliative and Hospice Medicine of Ministry of Health of Ukraine collaborates with European Association of Palliative and Hospice Care, International Association of Hospice and Palliative Care, International Fund “Renaissance” (Kyiv).
